Para Karl Marx, la desigualdad es el motor del sistema capitalista y surge del conflicto inevitable entre quienes poseen los medios de producción y quienes solo tienen su fuerza de trabajo. En cambio, Émile Durkheim ve la sociedad como un organismo vivo donde la desigualdad es un síntoma de "anomia" o falta de regulación. Mientras Marx propone una revolución para cambiar el sistema, Durkheim sugiere reformas institucionales para restaurar la solidaridad y el orden social.
Según la perspectiva marxista, la alienación ocurre cuando el trabajador pierde el control sobre su propia actividad y el fruto de su esfuerzo.
