Nitrification and denitrification are two distinct stages of the nitrogen removal cycle. Nitrification is an aerobic process that converts ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate using oxygen. In contrast, denitrification is an anaerobic or anoxic process that takes those nitrates and transforms them into harmless nitrogen gas. Both stages are essential in activated sludge systems to ensure comprehensive nitrogen reduction and meet environmental safety standards.
An anoxic zone is necessary because it provides an environment where dissolved oxygen is absent, but nitrate is present. In these specific conditions, heterotrophic bacteria are compelled to strip oxygen atoms from nitrate molecules to facilitate their metabolism. Activated sludge serves as the biological engine for the denitrification process by maintaining a high concentration of biomass and microorganisms.
