Explore the global sanitation crisis and the modernization of urban infrastructure. Learn about wastewater collection, public health, and sewer systems in Indonesia.

We are moving from 'just get rid of the waste' to 'how do we use technology to make this a resource?' It is shifting from a disposal problem to a management opportunity.
Wastewater collection

The scale of the global wastewater challenge is staggering, with urban areas generating approximately 380 billion cubic meters of wastewater annually. Despite modern technology, a massive silent crisis exists where 2.6 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed sanitation. This results in a significant amount of water flowing back into the environment untreated, posing a major threat to both public health and environmental survival as cities continue to grow rapidly.
Modernizing wastewater collection is about much more than just pipes and pumps; it is a fundamental requirement for public health and environmental survival. As urban areas expand faster than ever, the gap between population growth and infrastructure becomes more intense. Efficient urban infrastructure and centralized sewer systems are essential to manage the hundreds of billions of cubic meters of wastewater generated by global cities every year.
Indonesia faces an intense gap between its rapid population growth and its existing urban infrastructure. Currently, only about 4 to 7 percent of the population in Indonesia is connected to a centralized sewer system. This low connection rate highlights the urgent need for modernizing wastewater collection and expanding safely managed sanitation to protect the public health of its citizens and the integrity of the local environment.
