AltaVista was one of the most influential early search engines, launched in 1995 by researchers at Digital Equipment Corporation. It was the first tool to provide a fast, searchable index of the World Wide Web's full text, revolutionizing how people found information online. Before the rise of Google, AltaVista was the go-to destination for millions of users, setting the standard for web crawling and indexing technology during the early days of the internet.
The decline of AltaVista was caused by a combination of corporate shifts and increased competition. After being sold by Digital Equipment Corporation, the site struggled to maintain its focus as it attempted to become a web portal. This allowed Google to capture the market with a cleaner interface and better algorithms. Eventually, AltaVista was acquired by Yahoo in 2003 and was officially shut down in 2013, with its remaining traffic redirected to Yahoo Search.
AltaVista was created by a team of computer scientists at Digital Equipment Corporation's Western Research Laboratory. The project was initially intended to showcase the power of the company's Alpha 64-bit servers. By using advanced hardware and innovative crawling software, the team managed to index the web much more efficiently than any previous service, making AltaVista the fastest and most comprehensive search engine of its time.
