When demand for money is high and supply limited during economic expansion, interest rates rise; during recessions, they fall. Bond yields adjust to remain competitive as market conditions change. Since the annual interest payment is fixed, this adjustment happens through price changes, creating an inverse relationship: when bond prices rise, yields fall, and vice versa. Current yield is calculated by dividing the annual interest payment by the bond price. At par ($1,000), the current yield equals the coupon rate. However, "yield to maturity" provides a more accurate measure by accounting for both interest payments and any capital gain or loss at maturity. For bonds purchased at a discount, yield to maturity exceeds current yield; for premium bonds, it's less. Most bonds include "call provisions" allowing issuers to retire bonds before maturity, typically after a specified period. This gives issuers flexibility to respond to interest rate changes-they can retire high-interest bonds when rates fall, issuing new ones at lower rates. Called bonds are usually redeemed at a premium, often one year's interest above face value. Bond ratings measure the probability of issuers repaying principal and meeting interest payments. Standard & Poor's and Moody's, the two major rating agencies, rank bonds by default risk using letter systems: S&P uses AAA through D, while Moody's uses Aaa through C. Ratings from AAA through BBB (or Baa) are considered "investment grade," suitable for individuals and institutions, while lower-rated bonds require careful analysis as they're more speculative. Convertible bonds combine features of regular bonds with the ability to convert into a specific number of shares of the issuer's common stock. This convertibility links the bond's price performance to the underlying stock, causing wider price fluctuations than straight bonds. When the common stock trades above the conversion price, the convertible bond moves more closely with the stock. When below, the bond's price reflects prevailing interest rates and the company's ability to maintain interest payments. Municipal bonds are issued by states, cities, towns, and other public authorities to finance construction projects like hospitals and infrastructure. They differ from corporate bonds in three key ways: their interest is exempt from federal taxes (and often state and local taxes for in-state residents), they typically have serial maturities with portions maturing annually at different rates, and they're usually issued in $5,000 denominations (though quoted as if $1,000). Preferred stocks resemble bonds without maturity dates but have two critical distinctions: their dividends can be changed or omitted entirely (though cumulative preferreds require eventual payment of missed dividends), and preferred stockholders lack the legal claims that bondholders have if payments are missed. While preferreds offer higher yields than common stock and priority in receiving dividends and residual assets, they lack the safety of bonds and have limited participation in company growth. The money market serves investors with surplus cash and borrowers needing short-term funds, typically for periods under one year. It comprises several markets for different instruments: Treasury bills, commercial paper, negotiable certificates of deposit (CDs), and bankers' acceptances. Investors are drawn to the money market for its liquidity, safety of principal, and minimal interest rate risk due to short maturities.

Technical Analysis: The Art and Science of Market Timing

Technical analysis and fundamental analysis represent complementary approaches to the market. Understanding both provides investors with significant advantages, recognizing the strengths and limitations of each method. Technical analysis proves particularly valuable for timing decisions, becoming increasingly important as investment horizons shorten. Stock charts visually represent price history, with bar charts being the most popular format. These display a stock's price range (high, low, close) and trading volume over specific time periods-typically days, weeks, or months. Monthly charts provide the best starting point for identifying optimal buy/sell prices, with analysis then "fine-tuned" using shorter timeframes. Bar charts reveal various patterns over time, with support and resistance patterns being particularly valuable because they reflect investor psychology. Price support occurs when a stock breaks above a trading range, creating a psychological floor as investors who missed the move promise themselves to buy if the price returns to that range. Conversely, price resistance forms when a stock breaks below a trading range, establishing a ceiling as disappointed holders resolve to sell on any return to previous levels. These patterns gain significance when accompanied by high trading volume, indicating strong investor interest. The Dow Theory, among the oldest technical market tools, forecasts market direction by analyzing the Dow Jones Industrial and Transportation Averages. It views market movements as analogous to ocean patterns: daily fluctuations (ripples), intermediate movements lasting weeks to months (waves), and primary trends extending several months to years (tides)-the latter constituting bull or bear markets. A new primary trend is "confirmed" only when both averages penetrate their previous secondary peak points. Moving averages smooth stock price trends by calculating averages over specific time periods (commonly 50-day and 200-day/40-week). The moving-average deviation measures momentum by dividing current price by the moving average, helping identify new trends before they actually take place and detecting overbought or oversold conditions in volatile stocks. Advanced variations include Gerald Appel's MACD (moving-average convergence/divergence) and "Stochastics," which measures price velocity relative to a set range. Point-and-figure (P&F) charts differ from bar charts by ignoring time and volume while offering simplicity and readability. The chart shows price movement in only one direction at a time-using X's for advances and O's for declines-changing columns only when a reversal of the predetermined amount occurs. P&F charts excel at identifying support/resistance levels and breakouts. Technical indicators function like a batter noticing a pitcher's tell before a fastball-they don't guarantee success but improve odds. These statistical tools derive from four primary sources: business data, investor activity analysis, market action, and coincidental factors. While few work perfectly at every market turn, maintaining a portfolio of indicators or creating a composite index can enhance reliability. The VIX measures market emotion through S&P 100 index option volatility. It spikes during market despair and shows low readings near market highs. The "normal" VIX range shifted from 20-25 to 10-25 in 2004-2006, before reaching extreme readings above 80 during the 2008 financial crisis-marking one of the most volatile periods since 1929. The McClellan Oscillator evaluates money flow in markets by comparing 19-day and 39-day exponential moving averages of market breadth. Readings above +75 indicate overbought conditions (excessive buying), while readings below -75 signal oversold conditions (excessive selling). Extreme readings of 200 often mark short-term market turning points. The oscillator effectively tracks supply and demand dynamics-as it rises, more money enters the market, increasing potential future supply; as it falls deeply negative, available supply diminishes, setting the stage for potential upturns. While some dismiss technical analysis as more art than science, recognizable patterns have emerged over decades of market observation. Combining technical tools with fundamental analysis gives investors the best chance of making profitable decisions in both bull and bear markets.
