She arrived at sixteen, finding UVA comfortingly "moderate, not extremely liberal" compared to her evangelical school background. Despite boys who half-jokingly referred to the "War of Northern Aggression," it seemed progressive compared to the outright racism she'd known. The university embodied a recruitment brochure come to life-everyone finding their people, carrying books across green expanses, sharp but not pretentious. In 2014, Rolling Stone published "A Rape on Campus," an article that went viral immediately, becoming the magazine's most-read non-celebrity piece ever. At UVA, reactions were explosive but mixed. Protesters marched on Rugby Road with signs saying "Burn Down the Frats" while Phi Psi was vandalized. The campus newspaper overflowed with responses acknowledging the Greek system's insidious leeway while questioning Rolling Stone's intentions. As a 25-year-old editor at Jezebel with no investigative reporting experience, Tolentino noticed some details were off but didn't recognize these as red flags. Soon, journalists began dismantling the story, discovering the reporter had never contacted "Drew" or any of the alleged attackers. The Washington Post found Phi Psi hadn't even held a party on the night in question, and Jackie's story contained major discrepancies. By December 5, Rolling Stone was forced to retract the article. Through depositions and the Columbia Journalism Review's investigation, the truth emerged: Jackie had experienced something distressing in 2012, but her story had dramatically evolved by the time she met the reporter in 2014. The reporter, working under a lucrative contract and seeking a dramatic campus rape story, ignored warning signs when Jackie's account changed and when she refused to provide names. Despite the article's retraction, UVA's history reveals a troubling pattern: for decades, the university expelled students for honor code violations like plagiarism while refusing to treat rape as serious. Between 1998 and 2014, 183 students were expelled for honor violations, while sexual assault was met with minimal consequences. UVA was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who envisioned a secular public university accessible to all white men regardless of wealth. Today, Jefferson's cult of personality permeates campus life-he's affectionately called "TJ" or "Mr. Jefferson," and the school celebrates his ingenuity and integrity while glossing over his contradictions. Jefferson owned Sally Hemings, who was thirty years younger than him and became his property as an infant. When she was fourteen, she accompanied his daughter to Paris, where Jefferson met them. By sixteen, Hemings was pregnant. Though she could have remained free in France, Jefferson persuaded her to return by promising privileges and eventual freedom for her children. Despite writing about Black people's supposed inferiority, Jefferson maintained this relationship for years while publicly denying it. From its inception, UVA struggled with student misconduct. The university was "new and experimental," without church backing or alumni support, making student misbehavior an existential threat. Despite this, students from the Southern slave-owning class displayed "an exaggerated sense of self-importance," drinking and fighting excessively. Jefferson believed that "pride, ambition, and morality" would naturally guide student behavior, making strict rules unnecessary. But the concept of honor in the white Southern context was inextricably tied to violence, serving as both cover and fuel for the university's worst transgressions. College towns exist in a state of perpetual amnesia, their populations turning over every four years. At UVA, this has enabled a persistent denial of uncomfortable truths-that slave laborers built its fetishized campus, that it has a long history of sexual violence, that Alderman Library was named for a eugenicist president who once thanked the KKK for a donation. The school's self-conception can never become true until it acknowledges how false it has always been.

The Cult of the Difficult Woman

Over the past decade, a profound shift has occurred: it's now normal for women to understand their lives in feminist terms. What was once dismissed as "crazy" or "abrasive" is now recognized as sexist labeling. Media outlets still scrutinize women's appearances but claim to do so "in a feminist way." The journey from Britney Spears being upskirted on tabloid covers to Stormy Daniels as political hero represents a dizzying cultural transformation. The reframing of female difficulty as an asset rather than liability comes from decades of feminist thought suddenly flourishing in the internet's open ideological space. This manifests through narrative engineering-rewriting celebrity lives as feminist texts. Writers examine a celebrity's public narrative, highlighting the sexism that shaped it. Britney Spears, once portrayed as vapid and unstable, now seems sympathetic-crushed by impossible competing demands. Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston, depicted as strung-out monsters in life, are recognized as geniuses in death. Monica Lewinsky wasn't a dumb slut but an ordinary twentysomething exploited by the most powerful boss in America. Analyzing sexism through female celebrities is catnip pedagogy: it takes a beloved cultural pastime (calculating a woman's worth) and gives it progressive political import. When we reclaim celebrities' stories, ordinary women's stories are reclaimed too. The Weinstein revelations were possible because women could finally count on feminist narrative interpretation. Women like Annabella Sciorra could acknowledge that rape led to industry banishment; Asia Argento could admit dating Weinstein after he raped her. But when a woman's worth is built partly on the unfairness leveled at her, things get slippery. Every woman faces backlash and criticism. Extraordinary women face more. All criticism exists in the context of sexism. These three facts have collapsed into one another, creating the idea that harsh criticism of a woman is always sexist, and furthermore, that receiving sexist criticism indicates a woman's worth. The underlying situation is simple: we're all defined by historical terms and conditions written mostly by and for men. Any woman whose name survived history did so against a backdrop of male power. Until recently, women were always introduced through male perspectives. There's always a way to recast a woman's life on women's terms-from biblical figures like Eve (not a sinner but a knowledge-seeker) and Lot's wife (exemplifying disproportionate punishment) to temptresses like Delilah, who seems today like a woman seeking pleasure and survival in a compromised world. Delilah's power was inextricable from the expectation of her powerlessness. She seemed harmless to Samson until she cut his hair while he slept in her lap. By nature, difficult women cause trouble that can be reinterpreted as good. Women claiming power historically belonging to men is both the story of female evil and female liberation. Since 2016, Tolentino has questioned how we interpret incidents like Kim Kardashian's gunpoint robbery and Elena Ferrante's doxing as parables about women's punishment for ambition. The deeper issue is how women's success is forever refracted through the obstacles they overcome, with their lives constantly interpreted as referenda on womanhood itself. By 2018, as celebrity and politics merged, the difficult-woman discourse moved into the mainstream political realm. The women in the Trump administration manifest many qualities celebrated in feminist icons: selfishness, shamelessness, ambition. Their treatment as celebrities reveals our cultural paradox-sexism remains ubiquitous, yet criticizing women about anything that might intersect with sexism seems incorrect. For Trump's female figures, this means criticism is often intercepted by sexism becoming the story, a dynamic they've learned to weaponize.

The Wedding Industrial Complex

At thirty, Tolentino has attended forty-six weddings with her boyfriend Andrew. Though they enjoy these celebrations, she doesn't want to marry - a stance that draws constant questioning and lectures about missing out on profound connections. Andrew faces less scrutiny, as weddings are presumed more significant for women. The wedding industry presents couples (mainly brides) with an expensive checklist: wedding planners ($3,500), venues ($13,000), florals ($2,000), catering ($12,000), photography ($6,000), and dresses ($1,600 average). This typically amounts to $30,000 spent in twelve hours, marketed as both fun and tradition. Historically, weddings were simple affairs where women wore colored, reusable dresses. The white wedding dress trend began with Queen Victoria in 1840 and was quickly reframed as "tradition." Victorian elites established formal wedding customs, while businesses emerged to profit from these new practices. Wedding extravagance has evolved from 90s minimalism to reality TV excess and Pinterest-perfect aesthetics. Today's Instagram era merges weddings with wellness culture, adding expenses like crystal cleansing, underarm Botox ($1,500), and premium photography packages reaching $27,000. Tolentino's disinterest in weddings contrasts with society's expectations. While girls are conditioned through media to dream of weddings, she preferred the adventure aspects of Disney movies over romance. Marriage historically disadvantaged women - from ancient laws permitting violence to American women needing husbands' permission for credit cards until 1974. The 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision redefined marriage as potentially gender-equal, though traditional straight weddings still reinforce inequality. Research shows marriage often benefits men's health while harming women's. The wedding spectacle offers women one day of glory in exchange for gradual social diminishment - creating two versions of a bride: the celebrated figure and her disappearing counterpart, both bound by patriarchal structures.
