Николай Васильевич Гоголь (1809–1852) был русским писателем украинского происхождения и мастером гротескной прозы, чья повесть «Шинель» является краеугольным камнем русского реализма и литературы абсурда.

Родившись в Сорочинцах на Украине, Гоголь переехал в Санкт-Петербург в 1828 году и зарекомендовал себя как литературный новатор, известный своим мрачно-комическим мироощущением и прото-сюрреалистическим стилем. В «Шинели» через трагическую историю мелкого чиновника исследуются темы бюрократической дегуманизации, социального отчуждения и экзистенциального отчаяния, при этом используется характерный для Гоголя прием остранения, обнажающий абсурдность имперского российского общества.

Другие знаменитые произведения Гоголя включают роман «Мертвые души», сатирическую пьесу «Ревизор» и такие повести, как «Нос», «Записки сумасшедшего» и «Невский проспект». Его влияние на мировую литературу огромно, что признавали такие писатели, как Федор Достоевский, Франц Кафка, Владимир Набоков и Михаил Булгаков. Французский критик Эжен Мельхиор де Вогюэ сделал знаменитое заявление: «Все мы вышли из гоголевской „Шинели“», закрепив за этим произведением статус одного из самых влиятельных в истории литературы.
