Oil transformed everything: by 1913, over a million vehicles raced across roads that hadn't existed a generation earlier. Unlike previous energy transitions where alternatives existed, the automobile age offered no choice. Want mobility? Oil was the only option. This singular dependence reshaped civilization itself, enabling suburbs and commuting while making petroleum essential to economic survival.
