The smartphone in your pocket isn't just a tool-it's a mining operation, and you're the seam being worked. The year 2001 marked a turning point, though few recognized it then. Google was hemorrhaging money, investors were restless, and the dot-com crash had made "internet company" sound like a punchline. The breakthrough came not from innovation in search technology but from a realization about waste. All those searches people conducted, the clicks they made, the time they spent hovering over links-this "digital exhaust" that seemed worthless contained extraordinary predictive power. Engineers discovered they could forecast not just what you might click, but what you might buy, where you might go, what you might do next.
