Third, God's holiness forms the foundation of our respect and trust in Him, determining the height and depth of our worship experience.
The revelation of Christ's dazzling beauty emerges from His perfect holiness, but this insight is given only to diligent seekers, not casual inquirers. Even Jesus, as the Son of Man, "delighted in the fear of the LORD" (Isaiah 11:2-3), choosing holiness not merely out of obligation but with intense desire. Level Three encompasses sincere Christians who earnestly desire to please Christ but struggle with besetting sins like criticism, pride, unbelief, lust, covetousness, jealousy, or resentment. They continually confess the same sins, longing for freedom but unable to break the cycle. This is like someone who claims to hate something repulsive while secretly loving it-an absurd but accurate illustration of how many Christians approach sin, requesting prayer for victory instead of honestly acknowledging their attachment to what they claim to hate.
Level Four represents those with genuine fear of God who truly hate sin and therefore seldom sin. When they do sin, they quickly recognize it, immediately repent, and willingly humble themselves before others if the Holy Spirit directs them to do so.
Where do you find yourself in these levels? The honest answer may be uncomfortable but provides the starting point for authentic transformation. Moving from one level to another requires more than willpower-it requires a fundamental change in how we see both God and sin.

The Path of True Repentance
Repentance is essential for the preparation of the Bride of Christ before the Lord's return. It precedes genuine revival and represents an act of God's love toward us. When we won't respond to His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, God may use judgment-another aspect of His protective love.
God's wrath in Scripture is always judicial, administering justice as part of His awesome holiness. His judgment comes because of willful sin, and the resulting suffering is meant to deter us from further destruction. This is clearly demonstrated in His messages to the seven churches in Revelation, repeatedly calling them to "Repent."
Repentance directly affects our intimacy with God. Sin dims our revelation of Jesus, while holiness enables us to see the Lord more clearly. Consider the woman who stole money while working at a college store. For 35 years she confessed this sin to God but took no action to make restitution. When she sincerely prayed to know God better, He revealed she needed to repay $377. After sending the money with a letter of restitution, she experienced freedom from guilt and a new level of intimacy with God.
True repentance involves several essential steps: acknowledging the Holy Spirit's conviction, agreeing with God about our failure to meet His standard, confessing our sin verbally, and experiencing a genuine change of mind toward sin-choosing God's way instead of our own. This differs dramatically from mere confession. Pharaoh and King Saul both confessed sin but never truly repented, as evidenced by their subsequent actions.
We must see sin from God's perspective by searching Scripture and praying: "Lord, show me not only what You think about this sin, but how You feel about it," and "Show me my heart as You see it." This revelation may come immediately or require persistent seeking, but seeing our hearts through God's eyes-exposing root sins of pride or unbelief-brings devastating yet ultimately liberating truth.

Our sinful choices are often influenced by factors beyond our immediate awareness, including hereditary bondages and past traumas that shape our behavior patterns.
Hereditary bondages can unconsciously influence our behavior in powerful ways. Similarly, ethnic jokes, though seemingly harmless, are inconsistent with biblical standards because they subtly demean others created in God's image.
Traumatic experiences can cause wounds to our human spirit that affect current behavior in ways we don't recognize. The Holy Spirit can reveal these hidden causes and release healing power for painful memories when we come in simple faith, asking the Father in Jesus' name for healing-provided we've fully forgiven those who hurt us. Isaiah 53:4-5 promises this healing through Christ's sacrifice.
True forgiveness requires recognizing it as an act of will rather than feeling; understanding that God's forgiveness of us depends on our forgiveness of others; remembering all God has forgiven us; thanking God for any blessings received through the person who hurt us; considering the needs of the offender; receiving God's supernatural love by faith; seeking opportunities to express love to them; becoming an intercessor for them; and refusing to speak about how they wronged us. When fully implemented, these principles bring complete freedom from bitterness.
After addressing these influences, we must pursue a change of life by asking God to transform our habit patterns. Scripture provides the keys-particularly studying Bible verses related to our specific struggles. Repentance includes humbling ourselves and making restitution to those we've wronged. We should be prepared to confess our sin to at least one trustworthy person who can pray for us, as this uniquely releases the Spirit's power.

The Battlefield of the Mind
All sin begins in the mind-we're only as holy as our thought lives. Our thoughts sound as loudly in heaven as our words do on earth, and God sees them all. Repentance serves multiple divine purposes: it stops grieving Jesus who paid for our sin, prevents quenching the Holy Spirit's power, enables us to fulfill our Christ-like destinies, allows intimate friendship with God, protects us from sin's destructive force, empowers effective evangelism, removes barriers to revival, prepares us as Christ's spotless Bride, readies us for the judgment seat of Christ, and prepares us for eternal service-as our earthly faithfulness determines our heavenly responsibilities.

Holy Relationships: The Trinity as Our Model
The fear of the Lord resolves all relationship problems, regardless of gender. Jesus demonstrated this through His pure interactions with women like Mary of Bethany and the repentant woman who anointed His feet. These encounters were intimate but without sexual connotation, showing that true holiness and naturalness go together. Only truly holy people can be completely natural, as they have nothing to hide.
With the fear of the Lord, we can express sincere, deep love to anyone without lust. Our relationships should mirror the Trinity's standard: equal in value but different in function, completing rather than competing, dependent on each other in humility, maintaining absolute truth and trust, glorifying one another, sharing singleness of purpose, and maintaining absolute holiness.
God created sex as a wonderful gift for procreation, comfort and enjoyment within marriage. The purest mind in the universe designed sexual relations, and the purer our minds, the more we worship God for this gift. God provides clear guidelines for sexual expression only within marriage, knowing what's best for us spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.
God tests our trustworthiness by placing us alongside the opposite sex where we may experience four attractions: spiritual unity (the deepest), mental affinity, personality compatibility, and physical attraction. Those who choose holiness and fear the Lord can be trusted in any situation with any person, finding victory over temptation rather than disappointment.
Women possess tremendous power to influence men either toward holiness or away from it. This explains why Satan approached Eve in Eden-her influence was pivotal. God designed women to be "helpers fit for" men, serving either as stepping-stones toward holiness or stumbling blocks. History might have been dramatically different had certain biblical women made different choices: if Eve had resisted Satan and influenced Adam toward obedience; if Bathsheba had refused David's advances; if Sarah had encouraged Abraham to tell the truth rather than lie about their relationship.
Any relationship is only pleasurable and fulfilling to the degree that the fear of God remains its foundation. When we prioritize pleasing God above pleasing others or ourselves, our relationships develop a depth and purity that transcends cultural norms.

The Rewards of Holy Fear
God promises extraordinary rewards to those who fear Him. In Malachi 3:16-17, we learn that God keeps a special book of remembrance for those who fear Him, making them His "special possession" with unique protection. But the greatest reward is intimate friendship with God Himself-the most exciting, holy, wonderful Person in the universe.
This friendship fulfills both God (because it's why He created us) and ourselves. Every person is either fulfilled or frustrated to the degree they maintain this intimate friendship with God, which can only develop through the fear of God. Scripture offers an extensive list of 39 specific promises for those who fear God, including fruitfulness, deterrence from sin, blessings on children, prolonged life, deliverance, God's friendship, provision, protection, wisdom, satisfaction, honor, and many other benefits.
The fear of the Lord is both the beginning of wisdom and instruction in wisdom, increasing as holiness increases. This wisdom helps us discern when to speak and when to be silent, balancing openness (transparent honesty, quick admission of sins, good communication) with discretion (keeping confidences, careful sharing of revelation, and speaking truth with grace).
Despite our failures in walking in the fear of God, His mercy extends to truly repentant hearts. God promises to do wonders among those who sanctify themselves, being the God of tomorrow's fresh plans despite today's mistakes. Our greatest weaknesses can become our greatest strengths when we humble ourselves and walk in holiness.
To obtain this fear requires five key steps: First, we must choose it with our will. Second, we must confess our lack and cry out to God for mercy. Third, we must seek it with intense desire and receive it by faith, knowing God delights to impart it. Fourth, we must study it systematically from Scripture. Finally, we enter God's special school of the fear of the Lord, which begins with controlling our tongues-avoiding criticism, judging, unbelief, murmuring and pride.
