Riddle attempts to capture Hagrid's creature - a large spider - but it escapes. Harry emerges from the memory convinced that Hagrid opened the Chamber of Secrets. Though troubled by this revelation, Harry and his friends hesitate to confront Hagrid, doubting he would intentionally harm anyone. Hermione suggests Riddle might have accused the wrong person, and they agree to wait unless another attack occurs. Before they can process this bizarre reunion, giant spiders the size of carthorses emerge from the trees and capture them, carrying them to a hollow filled with hundreds more enormous arachnids. There they meet Aragog, an ancient, blind spider the size of a small elephant - the creature Hagrid was raising fifty years ago when Tom Riddle accused him of opening the Chamber. Speaking in a clicking voice, Aragog reveals crucial information: he was the creature Hagrid was accused of releasing, but he insists he never attacked anyone. The girl who died was found in a bathroom, while Aragog never left his cupboard. Most importantly, he explains there's another creature in the castle that spiders fear above all others, though he refuses to name it. Despite their connection to Hagrid, whom Aragog calls "a good friend," the ancient spider allows his children to attack the boys, considering them "fresh meat." At the last moment, the Weasleys' enchanted car rescues them, driving them safely back to the castle grounds with its headlights blazing and engine roaring. Though traumatized by their close encounter with hundreds of giant spiders (particularly Ron, who suffers from arachnophobia), they've learned vital information: Hagrid was innocent of opening the Chamber fifty years ago, and the monster is something that terrifies even acromantulas.
