A second group of about fifty men emerged from the main gate at the southern end, making "such a vigorous defense" from a trench that additional lancers were needed to overwhelm them. A few defenders surrendered-some accounts say seven-but all were executed, reportedly on Santa Anna's direct orders. Most fighters died anonymously, shot or bayoneted by soldiers who had no idea whom they were killing. Jim Bowie was killed in his sickbed, covered with heavy blankets and unable to defend himself. Davy Crockett's fate has long fascinated historians, with competing accounts claiming he either died fighting heroically or surrendered and was executed-a controversy that would explode in the 1970s.

The Birth of a Legend

The moment the battle ended, the Alamo story became a powerful weapon in the propaganda war between Santa Anna and Sam Houston. Santa Anna hoped the tale of crushing defeat would destroy Texian morale, while Houston would transform it into a rallying cry. The battle's few survivors became crucial carriers of this narrative "virus," with Susanna Dickinson, the lone Anglo survivor, playing a pivotal role. Santa Anna personally arranged for her release, sending her to Houston's camp with both a demand for surrender and her eyewitness account. When news of the Alamo's fall reached Houston at Gonzales, he initially dismissed it as a lie to prevent panic. But when Dickinson arrived with her blood-splattered dress and firsthand account, chaos erupted. Houston quickly reframed the disaster by comparing it to the Battle of Thermopylae, calling the defenders' actions "equal to Spartan valor." Within hours, he ordered a retreat and the burning of Gonzales, beginning the "Runaway Scrape"-a mass evacuation of Anglo Texans eastward through mud and rain. Houston's advisers debriefed Dickinson and Travis's servant Joe, subtly reshaping their accounts to inject more heroism. Joe's initial report of Travis's sudden death at the wall was later transformed into a tale of the commander rising after being shot to slash a Mexican general with his saber-replacing rumors of suicide with a heroic end. Similarly, accounts emerged claiming Dickinson had witnessed Crockett fighting to the death with his rifle as a club, despite evidence he likely surrendered. The first published account of the Alamo appeared March 24 in the Telegraph and Texas Register, transforming Joe and Dickinson's testimony into a mansion of heroism and sacrifice. The newspaper portrayed valiant defenders dying inside the walls, Crockett surrounded by Mexican dead, and Travis using his dying breath to kill a Mexican officer. This account wasn't just news-it was a deliberate effort to build a legend, comparing the Alamo to Thermopylae and calling it "an event so lamentable, and yet so glorious to Texas." When news hit American newspapers, beginning March 28 in New Orleans, the press exploded with grief and outrage. Crockett's death particularly drove coverage, with papers portraying him as "immortal in glory." Even newspapers that had opposed the Texas war now called for vengeance. States and cities pledged money, men and weapons. As Houston drilled his growing force at Groce plantation, the Alamo narrative became his most powerful weapon. His men discovered within themselves a new purpose-part thirst for revenge, part gnawing shame at failing to reinforce Travis. The story created a desperate spirit, with one man writing home, "We ask nor expect no quarter in the future." This desperation would prove decisive in the coming battle.
