When the Soviet economy collapsed in the 1990s, output shrank by more than half, plunging 70% of Russians into poverty while insiders grabbed state assets at bargain prices. By January 2000, Russians were ready for a new leader who blamed their problems on the West and promised to revive Russian tradition.
Though not fully Fascist, Putin has concentrated power by undermining governors, legislature, courts, private sector, and press. Critics often end up jailed or murdered. He's placed KGB alumni in key positions, doubled state control of the economy, and created a security apparatus to suppress dissent. Unlike polarizing leaders like Chavez, Putin presents himself as the face of the nation, targeting opponents not on policy but by labeling them traitors. In Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has transformed from a promising democratic reformer to an increasingly authoritarian figure. After winning the presidency in 2014, he seized on a failed coup attempt as an opportunity to consolidate power. In spring 2017, he narrowly won a referendum abolishing the prime minister position and transferring its powers to himself, allowing him to appoint judges, control budgets, dictate security policy, and potentially remain in office until 2029.
Though Turkey faces genuine terrorist threats and has absorbed many refugees, Erdogan must decide whether to continue down the path of recrimination or build a truly democratic society where different visions of Turkish identity can coexist peacefully - something no Turkish leader has yet achieved.

When government response seems weak, a mesmerizing orator emerges, accusing leaders of cowardice and calling for revolution. He promises to destroy terrorists through "baptism by fire" and restore America's purity and pride, urging followers to prepare for struggle against enemies and their enablers.
Albright's Georgetown students believe America is vulnerable to fascism precisely because we're so certain it can't happen here. Our faith in democratic institutions may blind us to their incremental erosion until we suddenly find ourselves in a quasi-fascist state.
Additional concerns include Congress's abdication of war powers, social grievances that abound today, and our media bubbles that reinforce grievances rather than encouraging critical thinking. Trust in institutions has eroded. We no longer share a common information base as we did when major networks and newspapers provided a centrifugal force in American society.
Consider how we've normalized extreme positions that would have been unthinkable just decades ago. The vital political center has emptied, historically a warning sign of extreme problems ahead. We should be wary of our tendency to seek easy answers for complex problems - a tendency Hitler explicitly exploited, explaining his popularity by saying he reduced complicated political problems to "the simplest terms" that the masses could follow.
When evaluating leaders, we should ask: Do they cater to prejudices? Nurture anger toward perceived enemies? Encourage contempt for governing institutions? Destroy faith in independent press and judiciary? Exploit patriotic symbols divisively? Reject electoral defeats? Claim to solve all problems? Speak casually about violence? Believe crowds should "submit to being shaped"?
Or do they invite us to build a healthy center where rights and duties are fairly apportioned and all can dream and grow? These questions won't reveal political leanings, but they will reveal much about those seeking leadership and about ourselves.
Abraham Lincoln faced brutal criticism, called "vacillating & inefficient," "weak as water," and "an admitted failure." Critics mocked him as a coward, bumpkin, and idiot. Yet today he's universally revered. Lincoln never mocked the downtrodden, bragged of accomplishments, or showed personal cruelty. Though a savvy politician who compromised civil liberties during wartime, his aim never wavered: saving the nation from its worst passions. His communications spoke to "better angels" and urged "malice toward none," asking a grieving nation to consider its own complicity in slavery while rejecting vengeance.
Democracy hasn't failed, yet we often feel it has. Perhaps we've grown impatient with democracy's pace, manipulated by hucksters promising easy solutions, or confused by the illusion of decisiveness and faux drama that prevents us from recognizing truth. For freedom to survive, it must be defended; for lies to stop, they must be exposed. For those who cherish freedom, the answers to these questions provide either reassurance or warnings we dare not ignore.
