Ume died less than a year later at sixty-four. Her school was renamed Tsuda Eigaku Juku-the "Tsuda Home School of English"-and her ashes were placed on the rebuilt campus, surrounded by plum trees. These three remarkable women-Sutematsu, Shige, and Ume-navigated between two worlds at a pivotal moment in history.
