While researching the successful mobile game Parallel Kingdom, Chou planned to spend only two hours learning its mechanics but ended up playing for two months. Social Influence & Relatedness is one of the best-studied Right Brain Core Drives in gamification, with most people recognizing social activities as intrinsically fun. This Core Drive enhances other drives-making creativity more enjoyable, accomplishments more meaningful, and possessions more valuable through comparison. However, overusing social mechanics can lead to friend-spamming that destroys trust.

The final three Core Drives-Scarcity & Impatience, Unpredictability & Curiosity, and Loss & Avoidance-represent the "Black Hat" side of motivation. While powerful at driving immediate action, they can create negative feelings when overused.
Scarcity & Impatience motivates us through unavailability or difficulty in obtaining something. We naturally desire things we can't have-like grapes just beyond our reach suddenly becoming more appealing. The South Park episode "Cartmanland" perfectly illustrates this through exclusivity. When Eric Cartman buys a theme park solely for himself, creating a TV commercial emphasizing "So much fun in Cartmanland, but you can't come!" As operational costs force him to gradually admit paying customers, the park's perceived exclusivity drives massive demand.
While we believe we make purchasing decisions based on price and quality, psychological studies show we buy based on perceived value rather than actual value. In a 1975 experiment, people valued identical cookies more when they came from a jar with only two cookies versus one with ten cookies. When participants watched the ten-cookie jar reduce to two, they valued those cookies even more than the original scarce ones.
Our brains instinctively seek things that are scarce or fading in availability. Sales expert Oren Klaff exploits three fundamental behaviors: we chase what moves away from us, want what we cannot have, and value things difficult to obtain. Users' response is generally proportional to their investment-losing progress after ten hours feels more impactful than after ten minutes. The author recommends threatening large setbacks (Ultimate Loss) while only implementing small ones (Executable Loss) to train users emotionally.
Understanding the balance between White Hat and Black Hat motivation is crucial for sustainable design. White Hat Core Drives create feelings of empowerment and fulfillment but lack urgency. Black Hat Core Drives generate immediate action through anxiety and obsession. The ideal design balances both, using Black Hat to create initial engagement while incorporating White Hat elements for sustainable satisfaction.

After exploring the eight Core Drives, we must consider how to combine them effectively for sustainable engagement. The Octalysis Framework provides a visual understanding of motivation's complexities and nature. Left Brain Core Drives correlate with Extrinsic Motivation, while Right Brain Core Drives correlate with Intrinsic Motivation. 2. Adding unpredictability: Build controlled randomness into the experience so results aren't always predictable. Consider variable rewards like Mystery Boxes (expected rewards with unknown contents) or Easter Eggs (unexpected rewards).
3. Adding meaningful choices and feedback: Design experiences where users can make meaningful choices that express their creativity, preferences and strategy. If all users take identical paths to achieve the goal, there are no meaningful choices.
The ideal approach combines both motivational types strategically: establish a White Hat environment where users feel powerful and comfortable, then implement Black Hat techniques at key conversion moments, before quickly transitioning back to White Hat to restore positive feelings.
Businesses should create an initial White Hat environment to generate interest, use Black Hat techniques for conversion, then revert to White Hat to eliminate buyer's remorse. TOMS Shoes exemplifies this by reassuring customers who might regret an expensive purchase with information about how their purchase provided shoes to a child in need.
While gamification is technically manipulation, many accepted social interactions like saying "please" and "thank you" are also forms of manipulation that we embrace.
