I once spent hours rockhounding for Herkimer "diamonds" (quartz crystals) in upstate New York, carefully breaking rocks to find hidden treasures. Working with a writer's notebook requires similar patience and attention-most entries won't yield anything immediately useful, but occasionally you'll discover something with extraordinary potential. The key to separating "sparkling crystal from dull rock" begins with rereading everything you've collected. Approach your notebook with dual perspective-as both writer and reader simultaneously. Ask yourself: What seems interesting, intriguing, bold or original in these entries? What has emotional resonance? What contains vivid imagery or language? Most notebook entries never germinate into finished pieces-I compare the process to maple syrup production: "It takes forty gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup." Sometimes just a single sentence holds promise, like my line "Morning twilight begins to erase the blackboard of stars" that eventually sparked an entire picture book. Poet and anthologist Lillian Morrison describes keeping "tons of notebooks" where she collects thoughts, book ideas, poem drafts, dreams, interesting passages from her reading, word lists, and overheard conversations. She regularly revisits old notebooks for inspiration and always keeps one beside her bed at night for those middle-of-the-night insights that might otherwise be lost by morning. When mining your notebook, look for entries that still evoke emotion when reread, contain specific sensory details, capture authentic dialogue, or present unique perspectives on common experiences. These are the elements most likely to develop into meaningful writing. Sometimes combining seemingly unrelated entries creates unexpected connections-a memory about your grandfather might suddenly illuminate an observation about changing seasons. The time between initial recording and discovery of potential is important. Distance allows you to see your writing more objectively, recognizing both its weaknesses and its hidden strengths. This is why regular rereading of old notebooks often yields surprising discoveries-entries that seemed insignificant when written reveal their value months or years later. The notebook exists to serve your creative process, not to impose constraints upon it. It should feel like freedom, not obligation-a space where your curiosity, perception, and imagination can roam without judgment or limitation.
