Noam Chomsky, born in Philadelphia in 1928 to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, has become one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Gifted with early intellectual curiosity, Chomsky found himself immersed in both political and linguistic circles as a youth, frequenting anarchist bookstores in New York City and entering the University of Pennsylvania at the age of sixteen. Although initially uninspired by formal study, a fortuitous meeting with linguist Zellig Harris redirected Chomsky’s interests toward theoretical linguistics, culminating in undergraduate and master’s theses on Modern Hebrew. Chomsky then spent several formative years as a member of Harvard’s Society of Fellows, where his thinking was shaped by interactions with leading analytic philosophers and mathematicians.
