Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, into a middle-class family that valued education, music, and outdoor life. His father, a physician, introduced him to hunting and fishing, while his mother encouraged artistic discipline. After high school, he did not attend college, choosing instead to work as a reporter for The Kansas City Star. That newsroom became an early training ground: its emphasis on short sentences, concrete detail, and disciplined observation shaped the style that later made him famous. A major turning point came during World War I, when he served as an ambulance driver in Italy, was badly wounded, and drew lasting material from the experience.
