The Virginia Iroquois primarily consisted of Iroquoian-speaking tribes such as the Nottoway and the Meherrin. Located south of the English settlements along the Nottoway and Meherrin Rivers, these groups were distinct from the coastal Powhatan Confederacy. While they lived in Virginia, they were part of a larger linguistic family that included the Haudenosaunee in New York and the Cherokee to the west, maintaining a unique cultural identity during a period of rapid colonial expansion.
The Nottoway and Meherrin shared a core linguistic DNA with the famous Iroquois Confederacy, or Haudenosaunee, despite being physically separated by Algonquian and Siouan-speaking groups. The Nottoway, who referred to themselves as the Cheroenhaka, viewed this linguistic identity as a vital part of their heritage.
