Explore the gender gap in German philosophy textbooks on The Missing Voices of Philosophy. Learn why female philosophers are underrepresented in the curriculum.

Philosophy is a fundamental human right that is being denied to many students when the curriculum is so narrow that they graduate without ever engaging with a woman's perspective on the soul, logic, or justice.
Die alten Philosophen, was alles nicht im deutschen Schulsystem gelehrt wird.

The gender gap in the German philosophy curriculum for the gymnasiale Oberstufe is significant, with over 90% of featured thinkers being men. Current textbooks often focus on Western traditions and male figures, meaning students in cities like Berlin or Munich can graduate without reading a single philosophical text written by a woman. This lack of representation creates an incomplete picture of the world for students studying ethics and the big questions of life.
In the gymnasiale Oberstufe, female philosophers are massively underrepresented compared to their male counterparts. As of May 2026, the approved curriculum remains dominated by male voices, with nearly 100% of the content originating from Western traditions. This disparity suggests that the educational materials used in high school philosophy and ethics classes do not yet reflect a diverse range of voices, leaving many important perspectives out of the classroom conversation.
The French philosopher Raphaël Enthoven has described the current state of philosophy education and its lack of diversity as 'völlig verrückt,' which translates to 'totally crazy.' This critique highlights the staggering reality that the majority of philosophical voices taught in schools are missing. By focusing almost exclusively on bärtige alte Männer, or bearded old men, the curriculum fails to provide the complete picture of human thought that schools are intended to deliver.
