Miles señala que en la vieja escuela el síntoma era el enemigo a batir, mientras que las Terapias de Tercera Generación proponen dejar de pelear con los pensamientos. Es un cambio que pasa de intentar 'arreglar' lo que pasa por la cabeza a cultivar una relación diferente con la experiencia interna. Se utiliza la metáfora de un jardinero que aprende a cultivar rosas aceptando que las espinas son parte inevitable del proceso.

    El contexto es vital porque estas terapias son mucho más sensibles a la función de lo que hacemos que a la forma del pensamiento en sí. Bajo el marco del contextualismo funcional, no se trata de juzgar si un pensamiento es correcto o erróneo, sino de entender cómo influye en la vida del paciente. Este enfoque permite una gestión de pensamientos más flexible, donde la persona aprende a convivir con su realidad interna sin que esta se convierta en un obstáculo insalvable.
