Homeostasis is a 'dynamic constancy' where your internal variables are constantly shifting and swaying, but always staying within a very narrow, predictable range to keep you alive.
Physiological

Homeostasis is the central governing principle of physiology, derived from the Greek words for "same" and "standing." It refers to the body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes, such as extreme temperatures. Rather than being a static state, it is a form of dynamic constancy where internal variables are constantly shifting and swaying to stay within a narrow, predictable range necessary for survival.
The body maintains physiological balance by acting like a tightrope walker making constant micro-adjustments. This process involves managing hundreds of variables simultaneously to ensure the internal environment remains stable. For example, whether you are in sub-zero mountains or a tropical beach, your body uses these adjustments to keep your internal cells in a consistent, climate-controlled environment that is independent of the outside world's conditions.
Dynamic constancy regulates critical internal variables such as blood pH and core temperature. Blood pH must be strictly maintained between 7.35 and 7.45, while core temperature typically hovers near 37 degrees Celsius. These specific ranges are not merely suggestions; they are vital requirements for life. The body monitors these levels constantly, moving and adjusting like a finger balancing a pencil to ensure these metrics stay within their healthy limits.
