While losing one of two engines represents a 50% loss of power, a pilot actually loses 80% to 90% of the aircraft's climb performance. This drastic reduction occurs because climb performance is dependent on excess thrust—the power available beyond what is required to maintain level flight. When an engine fails, the remaining thrust is often barely enough to overcome the drag of the aircraft, leaving very little "excess" for climbing.
VMC stands for Minimum Control Airspeed. It is the absolute slowest speed at which a pilot can maintain directional control of the aircraft with the critical engine inoperative. If the airspeed drops below this "red line," the thrust from the operating engine will overpower the rudder's aerodynamic authority, causing the plane to yaw and roll uncontrollably. Pilots manage this risk by maintaining a "Zero Side Slip" technique, banking slightly toward the operative engine to increase efficiency and lower the VMC speed.
In most single-engine planes, a loss of oil pressure causes the propeller to move to a low-pitch (high RPM) setting to help maintain flight. In a twin-engine trainer like the Seminole, the system is designed with the opposite failure mode: if oil pressure is lost, nitrogen pressure and a large spring force the propeller to "feather." Feathering turns the blades sideways into the wind to stop them from windmilling, which significantly reduces drag and makes the aircraft easier to control on a single engine.
The "Big Five" refers to the core mechanical systems that require specific knowledge and management in a multi-engine aircraft. These include the constant-speed propellers (governed by oil and nitrogen pressure), the landing gear (which is electronically activated but hydraulically actuated), the engines themselves, the fuel system, and the Janitrol combustion heater located in the nose. Understanding the failure modes of these systems, such as how the landing gear is held up by hydraulic pressure and will fall automatically if pressure is lost, is vital for safety.
The Engine Out Flow is a memorized sequence of actions performed immediately after an engine failure to stabilize the aircraft. It involves pushing mixtures, props, and throttles full forward, cleaning up the airframe by retracting gear and flaps, and then identifying and verifying the failed engine. Instructors emphasize that this flow must be as ingrained as a nursery rhyme, suggesting that students "chair fly" the maneuvers at home or even practice the verbal steps while stopped at red lights to build the necessary muscle memory for a high-stress emergency.
