Les moines utilisaient une technique architecturale ingénieuse appelée l'encorbellement. Ils empilaient des pierres sèches en faisant déborder chaque rangée légèrement vers l'intérieur jusqu'à ce que les parois se rejoignent au sommet, créant ainsi des cabanes en forme de ruches appelées clocháns. Ils ont aménagé des terrasses avec des murs de soutènement pour retenir la terre et créer un microclimat protégé du vent, leur permettant de cultiver des légumes dans le "Jardin des Moines". Leur régime alimentaire était complété par les ressources de l'océan et des falaises : ils mangeaient du poisson, des phoques, des moutons, ainsi que des oiseaux marins comme les macareux ou les pétrels. Ils allaient même jusqu'à escalader les parois de l'île voisine, Little Skellig, pour récolter des œufs de fous de Bassan.
L'île de Valentia possède une importance historique unique car elle abrite des traces de deux époques radicalement différentes. D'un côté, on y trouve le Tetrapod Trackway, des empreintes fossilisées vieilles de 385 millions d'années marquant le passage de la vie marine à la vie terrestre. De l'autre, l'île a été la "Silicon Valley" du 19ème siècle en accueillant, en 1866, le tout premier câble télégraphique transatlantique reliant l'Europe à l'Amérique, réduisant le temps de communication entre les deux continents de deux semaines à quelques minutes.
La visite de Skellig Michael est une expédition physique qui nécessite une préparation sérieuse. Il est impératif de porter des chaussures de randonnée avec une excellente adhérence pour gravir les 618 marches de pierre inégales et glissantes, qui ne possèdent aucune rampe de sécurité. Les visiteurs doivent également prévoir leur propre nourriture et eau, car il n'y a aucun service ni abri sur l'île, et ils doivent impérativement remporter tous leurs déchets. Enfin, en raison de la météo capricieuse de l'Atlantique qui cause l'annulation d'un tiers des sorties, il est conseillé de prévoir un séjour de plusieurs jours dans la région pour maximiser ses chances de débarquement.
Skellig Michael est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO et constitue une Zone de Protection Spéciale pour la biodiversité. Le site est un sanctuaire majeur pour de nombreuses espèces d'oiseaux, notamment les macareux qui nichent dans des terriers à même le sol. Afin de préserver l'intégrité des structures monastiques millénaires et de ne pas perturber la faune, l'accès est limité à 180 personnes par jour. Des règles strictes interdisent de sortir des sentiers, d'utiliser des drones ou de ramasser le moindre souvenir naturel comme des pierres ou des plumes.
