Explore the history of Mahatma Gandhi and the Salt March. Learn how India used nonviolent resistance against the British Raj to fight for independence.

In a gentle way, you can shake the world. You don't have to shout or push to make a difference; if everyone does one small, brave thing together, it becomes a giant wave of change.
The main goal of the Indian Independence Movement was for the people of India to become independent, which means being the boss of yourself. During the British Raj, Britain was in charge of India, making all the laws and taking taxes. The Indian people were unhappy because they were treated like guests in their own home and wanted the freedom to make their own rules and govern their own country without outside interference.
Mahatma Gandhi was a very special man who had a unique idea for achieving independence. Instead of using fists, shouting, or pushing to get his way, he believed in a different path. He led the movement using nonviolent resistance, showing that a country could fight for its freedom and stand up to the British Empire's rules without relying on physical force or violence to make their voices heard.
About a hundred years ago, Britain was in charge of India, acting as the ruler of a land far across the ocean. They controlled everything from the laws to what the Indian people could eat or make. It was a time when the British Empire held authority over the daily lives of Indians, similar to a stranger coming into a playroom and telling you that you cannot play with your own toys.
