The nitrogen in your DNA and the iron in your blood were forged in the hearts of stars that exploded long before Earth even existed. We are, in the most literal sense, a way for the Cosmos to know itself.

This is a literal biological and physical fact rather than just a poetic sentiment. The nitrogen found in human DNA and the iron present in our blood were forged inside the nuclear furnaces of ancient stars. When those stars reached the end of their lives and exploded, they scattered these essential building blocks across the universe, eventually forming the Earth and everything on it.

In the third century BC, Eratosthenes observed that at noon on the summer solstice, a vertical stick in the city of Syene cast no shadow, meaning the sun was directly overhead. However, at the exact same time in Alexandria, a stick did cast a shadow at a seven-degree angle. He realized this difference was caused by the curvature of the Earth and used the distance between the two cities to calculate that the Earth's total circumference was approximately 40,000 kilometers.

While Venus is similar to Earth in size and density, it suffers from a runaway greenhouse effect. Its atmosphere is 96 percent carbon dioxide, which traps heat so effectively that surface temperatures reach nearly 480 degrees Celsius. Unlike Earth, where most carbon dioxide is safely locked away in rocks, the gas on Venus remains in the atmosphere, creating a crushing pressure and a furnace-like environment.

Because light travels at a finite speed, it takes time for the glow of distant objects to reach our eyes. When we look at the Andromeda Galaxy, we are seeing light that left its stars two million years ago. Consequently, the further into space we look, the further back into the history of the universe we are seeing, allowing us to observe the Cosmos as it existed billions of years ago.

The Heike crabs possess shells that resemble human faces due to centuries of artificial selection by local fishermen. After a historic naval battle, fishermen began throwing back any crabs that looked like scowling samurai out of respect for the fallen. This allowed crabs with face-like patterns to survive and reproduce while others were eaten, eventually sharpening the resemblance over many generations.
