Learn to establish narrative authority in Chuck Palahniuk’s Minimalist Novel Workshop. Master the heart and head methods to build trust through every sentence.

If you can commit to writing one good sentence every day—a sentence that is a little masterpiece of sound and imagery—you will eventually have a novel.
Applying Chuck Palahniuk's minimalist writing style, recurring themes (transgression, consumerism, identity), and unique story structures (circular narratives, 'choruses') to the development of a new novel.

In this workshop, the Fight Club author emphasizes that writing is a contract with the reader based on authority rather than just plot. Following the minimalist tradition, Palahniuk teaches that every word must serve the story, focusing on the power of the single sentence. By studying minimalist prose, writers learn to treat their stories like poems or song lyrics where every line acts as a sign for the reader to continue.
Palahniuk identifies two primary ways to build authority: the heart method and the head method. The heart method uses honesty and vulnerability, showing the reader that the narrator is willing to look like a fool to tell the truth. Conversely, the head method relies on demonstrating deep, specific knowledge and research. Both methods prove to the reader that the narrator is the most qualified person to tell the specific story being shared.
Amy Hempel is a writer whose work exemplifies the minimalist style discussed in Chuck Palahniuk’s workshop. Her stories are noted for their precision, often reading more like song lyrics or poems than traditional prose. Palahniuk points to her work as a model for how the single sentence serves as the fundamental vehicle for authority, ensuring that the writer maintains the reader's trust from the very first page of the novel.
