Explore how childhood trauma impacts the body’s alarm system and stress response. Learn why the fight or flight response stays active and how to begin healing.

Instead of asking 'What’s wrong with me?', you start asking 'What happened to me?' and 'How did my body learn to protect me?' This shift is vital because your brain isn't broken; it's optimized for survival.
Childhood trauma

Childhood trauma can cause a child's natural alarm system to get stuck in the 'on' position. When a child faces an intensely threatening event, their fight or flight response kicks in to help them survive. Over time, this stress response may remain active long after the threat has passed, leading adults to overreact to small stressors because their bodies are still responding to old, unprocessed threats.
The fight or flight response is a survival mechanism that becomes a blueprint for how an individual reacts to stress later in life. In the context of trauma recovery, understanding this response allows individuals to shift their perspective from asking what is wrong with them to understanding how their body learned to protect them. Recognizing that the body is trying to finish processing an old threat is a vital step toward emotional healing.
Traumatic events are a core part of the human story rather than rare outliers. Research indicates that over two-thirds of children report experiencing at least one traumatic event by the time they turn sixteen. Because these experiences are so prevalent, they often serve as the underlying blueprint for adult relationships, stress levels, and overall health, making it essential to address the body's lingering alarm system.
