The name is derived from the Low Latin term 'Barbecana,' which refers to a fortified gateway or watchtower. Historically, such a structure stood near the northern Roman wall in London. This legacy of defense and fortification is reflected in the modern architecture of The Barbican, which functions as a massive concrete 'city within a city' that provides a sense of enclosure and protection from the surrounding urban environment.

Before the Blitz, the area was known as the Cripplegate ward, a bustling center for the 'rag trade' filled with tailors and dressmakers. Following the heavy bombing of World War II, the sixteen-hectare site was left as a vast, silent void. By 1951, the population had plummeted from a historical high of 14,000 residents to just 48, creating an existential crisis for the City of London Corporation.

The project was born out of a need to reclaim a bombed-out wasteland and preserve the City's political independence. Following the destruction of the Cripplegate ward, the lack of residents meant the City of London Corporation risked being swallowed up by the London County Council. To prevent this, they utilized the void left by the war to create an ambitious architectural experiment that eventually became a world-renowned Brutalist icon.
