It was designed to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh and to intimidate neighboring Nubian rivals, showcasing the immense power and divine status of the pharaoh.
The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was primarily dedicated to Ramses II himself, as well as the ancient Egyptian gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun, and Ptah. The facade is famous for four colossal statues of Ramses II seated on a throne. Adjacent to the Great Temple is a smaller temple dedicated to his beloved chief wife, Queen Nefertari, and the goddess Hathor, marking a rare instance in Egyptian history where a queen was honored with such a grand monument.
Abu Simbel is a masterpiece of Ancient Egyptian architecture because it is entirely rock-cut, carved directly into a sandstone cliff. The precision of the engineering allowed the sun's rays to penetrate the sanctuary and illuminate the statues of the gods only twice a year. Additionally, the entire complex is famous for a massive international rescue effort in the 1960s, which saw the temples dismantled and moved to higher ground to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
