At half-past six, Ned informed him they would wait by the boat at ten, when the moonless night would provide cover for their flight. Aronnax spent an hour in the saloon, taking a final look at the unrivaled collection of treasures destined to perish with their collector. Back in his room, he dressed in sturdy sea clothing and gathered his notes. His heart pounded as he listened at Captain Nemo's door, hearing footsteps inside. At half-past nine, he heard the organ playing a sad harmony, a soul's lament. He listened, barely breathing, before realizing he must cross the saloon where Captain Nemo played to reach his companions. Terrified but determined, he crept along the dark stairs and opened the saloon door. In the darkness, he could barely make out the captain, so absorbed in his music he didn't notice Aronnax slipping past. As he reached the opposite door, a sigh from Captain Nemo froze him. The captain approached silently, arms crossed, gliding like a specter. His breast heaved with sobs as he murmured words that struck Aronnax's ear: "Almighty God! Enough! Enough!"-a confession of remorse escaping his conscience. Aronnax rushed through the library to the boat where his companions waited. As Ned began loosening the bolts holding them to the Nautilus, they heard voices shouting within. But the crew's panic wasn't about them-they were shouting about the Maelstrom! They realized with horror that the Nautilus had been drawn into Norway's deadly whirlpool. Their small boat, still attached to the submarine, was carried in the spiraling current. They experienced sickening giddiness as the roar of waters broken on sharp rocks surrounded them. The Nautilus fought like a living thing, its steel muscles cracking as it sometimes stood upright in the current. "We must hold on," Ned shouted, "we may still be saved if we stick to the Nautilus-" Before he could finish, they heard a crashing noise as the bolts gave way. Their boat was torn from its groove and hurled like a stone from a sling into the whirlpool. Aronnax's head struck iron, and with the violent shock, he lost all consciousness. He awoke in a fisherman's hut on the Lofoten Isles, with Ned Land and Conseil safely beside him. They embraced heartily, though they had to wait for the monthly steamboat from Cape North to return to France. As Aronnax revised his faithful narrative of their incredible expedition, he wondered if he would be believed. He had crossed 20,000 leagues under the sea in less than ten months, witnessing countless wonders. But what became of the Nautilus? Did it survive the Maelstrom? Does Captain Nemo still live and pursue his retaliations? He hoped the powerful vessel conquered that terrible gulf. If Captain Nemo still inhabited the ocean, may his hatred be appeased by the contemplation of so many wonders! May the judge disappear and the philosopher continue his peaceful exploration! And to Ecclesiastes' ancient question-"That which is far off and exceeding deep, who can find it out?"-only two men living could answer: CAPTAIN NEMO AND HIMSELF.
