When my writing went viral during graduate school, a senior Black woman scholar warned me, "You need to stop writing so much. They're just using you." I was breaking the rules about who gets to have authority. Black women are often framed as problems to be solved rather than problem-solvers. We work endlessly-for churches, Black colleges, families, Black politics, and Black men's survival. But I was working the wrong way for a Black woman who didn't want to become a problem. Born with a birth defect that left me both pigeon-toed and bow-legged, I grew up hearing my mother's mantra to "fix your feet"-a phrase that joined others like "work twice as hard" in my subconscious playlist. I never walked normally, but I didn't walk deformed. This physical adaptation became a metaphor for my intellectual work, shoehorning political analysis and social theory into the personal essay-often the only genre afforded to Black women writers. Legacy media and white-owned platforms profited more from Black women's personal essays than the writers ever did. But my writing isn't simply personal essay. Drawing on "thick description," I interrogate why me and not my grandmother who was "do-the-Times-crossword-in-pen smart" yet died poor in a one-bedroom apartment. I explore what our individual experiences reveal about society, using data and research to challenge power structures. I hope these essays create space for Black women thinkers to receive better rewards. I want Black women to have "one damn job and not five or six"-economic security I want for everyone but "first and most of all for sisters." May reading my work spark a "gold rush for Black women writers" so thick with humanity that no Black woman intellectual has to fix her feet to walk this world again.

Beauty as Exclusion: The Politics of Desirability

When I casually described myself as "unattractive" in a piece critiquing Miley Cyrus's appropriation of Black culture, I faced unexpected criticism-not from men or white people, but from Black women. Some suggested I was seeking validation; others accused me of self-hatred. This criticism followed me even to a lecture at my historically Black college alma mater. From age eleven, when my body changed dramatically, I learned to be defensive of everything I called home-"my heart, my mental health, my car, my bedroom, my checkbook, my dreams, my body." While I learned early to be cautious of men, I didn't learn quickly enough to be wary of white women. In integrated schools, I discovered the unspoken rules of beauty and desirability, learning that "nothing was more beautiful than blond." By high school, I understood I could never meet the beauty standard. Beauty isn't just about appearance-it's about power, whiteness, and maintaining social order. "Beauty isn't actually what you look like; beauty is the preferences that reproduce the existing social order." While white feminists examine changing beauty standards over time, they often miss how beauty fundamentally excludes Blackness. Beauty standards may shift from Marilyn Monroe to Twiggy to Pamela Anderson, but whiteness remains the constant requirement. My first night at my HBCU, when a pizza delivery man showed interest in me and received an approving look from our Black male dorm supervisor, I had a revelation: "I was Sandy!" In this Black space, I could experience a kind of beauty where I was "normal, normative, taken for granted as desirable." This alternative beauty standard has its own costs-economic demands for thin waists, thick hips, tattooed brows, elegant contouring, red-heeled shoes, and femme styling that many Black women can't afford. Beauty is capital-not good capital, but valuable capital. It compounds gender oppression, costs money, colonizes, and can never be fully satisfied. When I say I'm unattractive, I'm not internalizing white beauty standards-I'm naming what's been done to me and signaling who did it. White women who insist I'm beautiful offer neoliberal self-help nonsense because they need beauty to be achievable and individual. If beauty isn't earned but assigned, they become as vulnerable as I am. Beauty must exclude me to function as it should for capital. Beauty is for white women; if it were for Black women too, it couldn't serve its purpose for capitalism. The structural apparatus of beauty punishes those who don't fit its white standards through higher punishment in schools, longer criminal sentences, lower marriage rates, and less economic mobility. Understanding that ugly isn't inherent-it's what's done to you in beauty's name-is essential to liberation.

When Competence Isn't Enough: Black Women and Healthcare

From childhood, I dreamed not of romance but of competency-the click-clack of purposeful heels and a briefcase. Yet competency remains elusive even with financial stability. Competency is a neoliberal fantasy that generates endless services promising control in an uncontrollable economy. Tools like LinkedIn exemplify technology's false promises-offering the feeling of competency without the structural means to achieve it. For Black women, structural incompetence is enforced through racism, sexism, and classism. During my pregnancy, this became painfully clear when I began bleeding at work. At my "good" obstetrics office on the wealthy, white side of town, I waited bleeding through a chair before being dismissed by a doctor who blamed my weight. Days later, with excruciating pain dismissed as constipation, I finally went to the hospital where they discovered tumors larger than my baby. Despite my education and insurance, nothing could override the assumptions tied to my blackness. After my daughter died shortly after birth, a nurse blamed me: "There was nothing we could have done, because you did not tell us you were in labor." Even Serena Williams, a global superstar, had to fight for life-saving treatment after childbirth. Black women in America die in childbirth at rates comparable to those in poorer nations-243 percent more likely than white women. Our structural incompetence as Black women persists regardless of status markers, revealing how deeply racism and sexism are embedded in healthcare bureaucracies. When Black women are strong in service to others, we're superheroes; when strong for ourselves, we're deemed incompetent. This paradox exposes the future of hypercapitalism: a system that demands incompetent subjects who seek technological solutions to political problems rather than addressing the root causes of inequality. What so many Black women know is what I learned sitting in a hallway with a dead baby in my arms: networks of capital work most efficiently when your lowest status characteristic is assumed. Once these gears are in motion, you can never be competent enough to save your own life.

Knowing Your Whites: Survival Through Observation

The elasticity of whiteness-its ability to expand or contract to maintain dominance-is something Black southerners like me understand intimately. We "know our whites" as a survival mechanism, anticipating their emotions and fears while critically withholding faith in them categorically. This knowledge was tested when I attended my first Obama house party in 2007 in Myers Park, a wealthy white Charlotte enclave built on generations of racist covenant restrictions and redlining. The neighborhood exemplifies opportunity hoarding: white families use economic privilege to purchase homes in communities with superior infrastructure, gaining access to well-funded schools they then transform through their advocacy into private-school experiences for their children. At that house party, I was the only Black person for nearly an hour. The white hosts confidently collected mobile payments for Obama, speaking of him with reverence typically reserved for Martin Luther King. While my mother and other Black people doubted a Black man could win, these white Myers Park residents were certain. The question was why. Obama's election created a national identity crisis. These were the "Good Negro Government" years that, like Black Reconstruction 130 years earlier, demonstrated Black political competence while stoking white fear. The paradox of how America could elect both Obama and Trump isn't about Obama's blackness but about whiteness itself-its need to expand to defend its position against any challenge. Obama was allowed to become president because he projected the paradox that defines whiteness. He reflected white voters' ideal selves back at them, promising to change the world without changing them, to change blackness for them without being too Black to them. His careful refusal to attribute opposition to racism was catnip to millions of white voters. Despite his intimacy with his white family, my first Black president didn't appear to know his whites. He couldn't imagine America electing Trump because he didn't understand that whiteness defends itself-against change, progress, hope, Black dignity, Black lives, reason, truth, facts. If you truly know your whites, disappointment rarely darkens your door. White Obama voters and white Trump voters express the same view of whiteness, each necessary for the other. In its fragility-ceding ground to Obama's multicultural vision-whiteness expresses its superiority. As Guy told me: "a tiger bites to remind you that it is a tiger."

When Black Is Never "Just Black"

At a meeting of professors working on a student project-all women who might be identified as Black at a glance-one colleague casually declared, "Black people are over." She meant we've moved past black and white thinking in our supposedly post-racial society. I didn't feel "over," yet this proclamation was made comfortably because of the kind of Black I'm presumed to be in academic spaces - educated, articulate, "different." The assumption revealed a deeper complexity about how Blackness is perceived and categorized in professional environments. What kind of Black am I? A senior scholar once told me, "I do not trust you. Too many white people like you," while warning that being a dark Black woman would prove problematic in academia. The comment exposed multiple layers of intra-racial politics and prejudice. It's a political question about aligning with Black interests, but which Black people? Those across the vast African diaspora? Political left or right? Those with non-Black parents? Caribbean-descended versus American-descended? I consider myself basic Black, though it's never that simple in a world obsessed with categorizing and subdividing racial identity. In sociology, we differentiate "black ethnics"-those not descended from American slavery or the Great Migration-though this implies black Americans lack ethnicity, a problematic assumption that erases rich cultural histories. Whiteness remains politically elastic, defined by state power, requiring legal systems to formalize irrational biological expressions and a police state to defend its sovereignty. This elasticity has historically expanded to include previously excluded groups like Irish and Italian Americans when politically expedient. Blackness serves as a static counterweight, though black ethnics complicate whiteness's desire for cheap labor and ideological mascots in the ongoing struggle for racial power dynamics. At elite universities, I encountered a persistent preference for black ethnic students, particularly those from African or Caribbean backgrounds, viewed as better prepared than U.S. black students. This practice effectively cherry-picks winners from stratified societies abroad while perpetuating stereotypes about American-born Black students. In academia, I've repeatedly encountered the assumption that exceptional Black people must be a "special" kind of Black - not "regular" Black but something more palatable to white institutions. When there's limited media space for "black issues," fierce tensions arise about who can legitimately represent Blackness in public discourse. People repeatedly ask me to identify as something other than "black-black"-suggesting Cape Verdean heritage, mixed ancestry, or other identities that might explain my perceived exceptionalism. My response has evolved into deliberate protest: if you think anything good about me, you must reconcile that with me being regular black-black. I refuse to code-switch on NPR, The Daily Show, or at the White House, maintaining my authentic voice and identity. Black is not over, despite claims to the contrary. The goal of anti-racist work has never been ending Blackness, but ending whiteness as a system of power and privilege that necessitates these complex negotiations of Black identity in the first place.

The Cost of Respectability: Status Symbols and Survival

When Black shoppers face discrimination, public discourse often shifts from outrage to questioning why Black people shop at certain establishments or spend money on status symbols. This criticism reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of how status symbols function as survival tools in marginalized communities. My family achieved modest "rural black wealth" through military benefits and insurance policies - carefully cultivated resources that took generations to accumulate. Education was our greatest resource, particularly for girls who could "talk like white folks," a skill that opened doors but carried its own emotional toll. I watched my mother perform respectability daily, code-switching between dialects and mannerisms to help neighbors navigate white bureaucracies, from school administrators to government offices. Respectability rewards are a crapshoot, but we do what we can within constraints designed to limit access to status and power. The dividends are hard to measure - how do you price a welfare clerk's double-take that gets you extra information about available programs? What's the value of a school principal deferring more to your child because your presentation signals middle-class advocacy? These small victories accumulate over time, creating pathways through systems designed to exclude. Poor people buy status symbols for the same reason others do - to belong and to survive in environments where appearance determines opportunity. But "presentable" is merely the minimum of social civility; "acceptable" grants access to rewards of group membership, from job interviews to housing applications to medical care. Gatekeepers repeatedly told me I was "acceptable" because my car was clean or my suit was Jones New York - signals I wasn't a "typical black woman." These judgments meant better jobs and higher baseline salaries for all my future employment, creating a compounding effect that justified the initial investment in appearance. When I interviewed candidates with my VP, I witnessed firsthand how these unwritten codes operated. She rejected a qualified hairstylist seeking mobility because she wore a cotton tank top under her blouse instead of a silk shell - a minor detail that became a major barrier. Status symbols become keys to unlock gates, from education to employment to healthcare. Those judging the poor's "stupid" spending forget that what we know about wealth and sacrifice is predicated on not being poor. The calculus of survival looks different when every interaction is filtered through prejudice. Only when born poor and treated as inherently poor will you understand the value of status symbols to someone who cannot afford to not have them - they become investments in future opportunities, not frivolous purchases. These unwritten rules of respectability politics create a double bind: spend money you don't have on symbols of belonging, or risk being locked out of opportunities that could help you escape poverty. The cost of respectability is high, but the cost of being deemed unacceptable is often higher.

When Black Girls Aren't Allowed to Be Girls

I've been drawn to black women's biographies since childhood, starting with Anne Moody's "Coming of Age in Mississippi" at age seven. Unlike the white protagonists in Ramona Quimby or Baby-Sitters Club books, black girls rarely appeared in school reading until I discovered Nikki Giovanni's poetry in seventh grade. The disturbing pattern I noticed: the easiest way to locate the girl in a woman's story was to search for sexual trauma. It was always there-"a dirty uncle, a mother's new husband, a dotty brother, a mean boy at school, a nasty white man, any nasty man." Being violated seemed to be the common thread connecting black womanhood alongside Jim Crow, beauty salons, and spirituals. I share sexual trauma with Oprah Winfrey, Gabrielle Union, and hundreds of black women who wrote to me about R. Kelly. While Kelly was becoming a crossover artist with inspirational songs like "I Believe I Can Fly," his reputation as a sexual predator was solidifying in black communities. At a house party, men laughed when I didn't want to watch the infamous R. Kelly video. One guy commented about the girl on the tape: "Look at that body. She almost ready." This revealed the persistent question: What would it take for a black girl to be a victim? My friends told me once they desired you, you couldn't be a victim. My cousin said once you were a "ho," you couldn't be a victim. Research confirms what black women have long known-people across gender and race see black girls as more adultlike than white peers. In her book Pushout, Monique Morris shows teachers and administrators don't give black girls needed protection. The presumption of childhood innocence is gossamer for black girls, with surveys showing most people believe black girls need less protection than white girls. These attitudes create devastating consequences in the legal system, where women already struggle to prove sexual assault. For black women, protocols like domestic violence cameras designed to document bruises often fail to detect injuries on darker skin, systematically erasing evidence of abuse. Men like R. Kelly operate in cultural spaces "Me Too cannot reach," where black men are considered "too oppressed to also oppress." For black girls, home becomes both refuge and site of intimate betrayal-where they're loved until they're labeled "ho."

The Privilege of Banality: Black Women in Media

In winter 2017, I began advocating on Twitter for a black woman to have a job as an opinion writer at a prestigious publication like the New York Times or Washington Post. This might seem like a small goal compared to larger issues like immigration detention or voting rights, but "Like many things, I wanted it because I wanted it." The absence of Black women's voices in major opinion sections represented a glaring void in our national discourse, one that spoke volumes about who gets to shape public opinion in America. Media professionals don't just write articles - they function as institutions, wielding significant influence over public discourse and policy debates. To quantifiably demonstrate this exclusion, I conducted a detailed analysis of influential opinion writers' social media engagement. Looking at David Brooks' Twitter follows, I discovered that of 322 accounts, only six belonged to Black women - less than 2% of his professional network. I then examined Jonathan Chait of New York magazine's following list, finding the identical number - six Black women among 370 follows. This pattern wasn't coincidental; it revealed how even when engagement costs nothing and requires minimal effort, prestigious opinion writers don't feel compelled to include Black women's perspectives in their intellectual orbit. The few Black women who do write op-eds for prestige publications often do so as a "second-, third-, and even fourth-shift job," juggling teaching positions, academic research, community advocacy work, and family responsibilities. While this public intellectual work generates some professional status and occasional payment, it comes with a heavy toll: regular harassment, death threats, and racist abuse, without the protective benefits and compensation that typically accompany mainstream media fame. Many must maintain their primary careers while producing commentary, creating an unsustainable burden that their white counterparts rarely face. Professional Smart People - as I call the established commentariat - can build entire careers without ever reading, interviewing, or seriously engaging with Black women's thoughts and experiences. This is precisely why I advocate for Black women to be "safely ensconced in the hallowed halls of prestige media." When the New York Times finally hired Michelle Alexander as their first woman of color opinion writer in 2018, she was notably overqualified - like most Black women in professional positions - with a Yale Law degree, civil rights expertise, and a bestselling book. Tellingly, she wasn't among the six Black women followed by either Brooks or Chait before her hiring. The freedom to be banal - to write about everyday topics like gardening, travel, or personal finance without being expected to represent an entire race - remains a privilege largely denied to Black women writers. We're routinely pigeonholed into writing about race and racism, but rarely invited to share perspectives on economics, foreign policy, technology, or cultural criticism. Even when Black women possess expertise in these areas, they're often overlooked in favor of less qualified white writers who enjoy the privilege of being seen as universal voices. This limitation reflects a broader pattern of exclusion that persists even in supposedly progressive spaces, where Black women's intellectual contributions remain marginalized despite their demonstrated excellence and unique insights. The result is a poorer public discourse that misses out on vital perspectives and experiences that could enrich our national conversation.
