Taoists map consciousness differently than yogis. After birth, the primal spirit dwells in the third eye (what yogis call agya chakra), while the conscious spirit lives in the physical heart. The physical heart depends on the outside world-affected by hunger, fear, and beauty-while the spiritual heart in the third eye remains unmoved, in perfect order.

Without meditation, we repress messages that continuously pour in, creating mental clutter like piles of unanswered letters. This accumulation demands attention, creating internal noise. Learning can't stop in today's rapidly changing world. Students can't respect teachers with thirty-year-old knowledge, and children can't respect parents with outdated approaches. Everyone must continuously learn or risk neurosis from unassimilated information. Sleep alone can't help because the mind continues sorting through the day's overload. We need conscious meditation-moments when the mind unclutters, experiences are digested, and freshness returns. In the past, input volume was one-tenth of one's time with nine-tenths for meditative time. Now it's reversed, with even unconscious meditative time disappearing as people remain glued to TVs and information streams instead of simply being with nature, playing with children, or sitting silently. Neurosis is fundamentally an unbalanced state-too much activity without inactivity, too much masculine without feminine, too much yang with too little yin. The secret is maintaining symmetry: being fifty-fifty in all aspects, becoming what Buddha called the middle way (majjhim nikai).

He's playful rather than serious, celebrating life instead of sacrificing it. He works but isn't a workaholic, content being nobody rather than famous. He uses money rather than being used by it, maintaining mastery over possessions. The New Man remains fluid, responding to changing situations rather than clinging to rigid orthodoxies. He grows continuously, finding his religion in nature rather than dead statues. His commitment is to authenticity-his inside matching his outside-eliminating the neurotic double-life of the Old Man who smiled outwardly while boiling within. His science seeks to understand nature, not conquer it. He reads the scripture of nature as his Bible and Koran, finding God hidden in this very earth: "This very body the buddha, this very Earth the paradise." Ambition is merely a consolation-a way to endure today's misery by fixating on tomorrow's promised joy. The New Man recognizes this futility of ambition and the politics that feeds on human neurosis. The New Man's concern will not be having more, but being more-getting in tune with one's being and falling into harmony with the universe.

The Golden Flower Blooms in Emptiness

All religions ultimately agree on finding the spiritual Elixir to pass from death to life, which means forever dwelling in purposelessness. On a magnificent full moon night when the earth appeared bathed in light, something extraordinary happened: Chiyono became enlightened. After studying for years without success, she was carrying an old water pail while watching the moon's reflection in it. Suddenly, the bamboo strips holding the pail broke, the water rushed out, the moon's reflection vanished-and in that moment, Chiyono became enlightened. She wrote a verse: "This way and that way I tried to keep the pail together, hoping the weak bamboo would never break. Suddenly the bottom fell out... No more water, No more moon in the water, Emptiness in my hand." Enlightenment happens when it happens-you cannot cause it, though you can prepare yourself to receive it. It comes when it comes, but if you're not ready, you miss it. With emptiness, the matter is settled. The ego is darkness, the very idea of separation from existence. When you drop this separation and see you are part of the whole, death and fear disappear. Enlightenment is the capacity to see oneself as one really is-utterly empty of ego. Enlightenment comes to a seeker only when they drop their seeking. This is the great paradox: it happens to those who have searched with total intensity and utterly failed. When hopelessness is complete and even the desire for enlightenment has left, suddenly it arrives. This is how it happened to Chiyono and Buddha. After six years of arduous practice, Buddha realized "the more I work for it, the more I am." On a full-moon night, when all desire had disappeared and he relaxed in complete let-go, he awakened.

This Very World, the Paradise

When silence fully descends, one cannot even locate or identify one's body anymore. This condition is "the penetration of heaven into Earth"-paradise descending as God reaches the seeker. The part becomes the whole, and life transforms into sheer poetry. Each moment becomes a unique wonder, each experience incredible. Boredom vanishes as the old, dead ego dissolves. Outside, existence takes on a quality of constant wonder, like a child discovering seashells on a beach. Inside, the miraculous returns to its roots-the simple miracle of being, without reason or earning. In this enlightened state, "One does not alter the place, but the place alters itself." Even the marketplace becomes as beautiful as the Himalayas, ordinary reality suffused with extraordinary beauty. You need not escape the marketplace or renounce the world. When you attain inner silence, the place alters itself. The same trees you passed daily without notice suddenly burst forth with flowers and fragrance. Life becomes psychedelic, colorful. This is the criterion of enlightenment-not that you change the world, but that the world changes around you. Escaping solves nothing, for you carry your inner blueprint wherever you go. Like a seed that creates the same tree wherever planted, your unconscious patterns will recreate the same situations. Only by burning the seed within can transformation occur. This very world becomes paradise, this very body the Buddha's body. When your heart attains absolute tranquility, you stop reacting to external stimuli and allow the whole to move you. This is what Jesus meant by "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done"-surrendering to the total. When no ideas arise, right ideas naturally come. It's not that doing right makes you a saint; being a saint makes everything you do right. When God floods you completely, leaving no corner untouched, this is enlightenment-being full of light. You return to your original face, beyond polarity, neither man nor woman, positive nor negative. In the beginning you are beyond polarity, in the end you are beyond polarity again. Only in between are you divided. The source is the goal. Without ego, you live in eternal purposelessness. Existence isn't a business; it's sheer joy, playfulness, leela. Energy delights in expression-dancing, singing, creating-for no purpose at all. Dance for dance's sake, love for love's sake, existence for existence's sake. The deepest secret is making the heart empty, and therewith the matter is settled. No scriptures, temples or priests are needed. Be a hollow bamboo so God can make a flute of you.

Just one conscious glimpse transforms your entire day, allowing you to remain connected to your inner core even in the marketplace. The third confirmatory sign begins in early meditation stages. Sitting silently, you suddenly feel yourself floating six inches above ground. Opening your eyes in surprise, you find your physical body still on the earth, making you think you were dreaming. But you weren't-your subtle body, the body of light, had risen while your material body remained grounded. When this happens, your fleshly body becomes luminous like silk or jade. You feel drawn upward as if gravity no longer affects you, replaced by what I call "the law of grace"-the complementary opposite of gravitation that pulls you upward. The more inward you go, the more upward you go; they are synonymous dimensions. Eventually, with tremendous power, even your physical body might float, though seeking this outcome is foolish. Master Lu-tsu emphasizes that meditation should be practiced within ordinary life, not through world renunciation. He insists practitioners shouldn't abandon their daily occupations, as every situation is divinely given for our growth.
