Capítulo 1
The Prayer That Changes Everything
Imagine a world where your mind isn't constantly hijacked by worry, doubt, and anxiety. A world where a simple six-word prayer could transform not just your thinking but your entire reality. This is the promise of "The Only Little Prayer You Need," which has become a quiet phenomenon among spiritual seekers and practical-minded individuals alike. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and embraced by celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, who featured it in her "SuperSoul Sunday" series, this little book offers a revolutionary approach to inner peace. Author Debra Landwehr Engle, after thirty years studying A Course in Miracles, discovered this prayer during an ordinary moment of frustration that transformed into an extraordinary revelation. What makes this approach so compelling is its simplicity-it doesn't require complex rituals or theological understanding, just a willingness to acknowledge that our fear-based thoughts are the true source of our suffering. In a world increasingly dominated by anxiety and uncertainty, this book's message has resonated deeply, offering a practical pathway to peace that transcends religious boundaries.
Capítulo 2
The Revelation Behind the Prayer
It all began with a seemingly insignificant moment. In January 2013, I was picking up our Honda CR-V from the body shop with my husband Bob. Though the dent was repaired, the door wouldn't close properly and required slamming. As I drove home following Bob, I noticed rattles and vibrations in the dash that worsened with every bump. My thoughts spiraled negatively, blaming Bob, the mechanic, and myself for weeks of inconvenience.
Despite years studying spiritual traditions, I still found myself falling into negativity too easily. Exhausted by this pattern, I realized I couldn't fix the problem with the same mind that created it. Sitting in the car while Bob handled paperwork, I spontaneously said this simple prayer: "Please heal my fear-based thoughts."
When Bob returned, I was still in a bad mood despite my prayer. I complained about rattles and vibrations, and Bob took notes for the body shop. Yet as we drove on the interstate, we hit bumps and heard nothing-no rattles, no vibrations. The problems had vanished. Part of me felt glad, another part felt cheated of the opportunity to blame Bob.
Back home, my inner voice spoke clearly: "You asked me to heal your fear-based thoughts. I did. And when your thoughts were healed, there was nothing left to rattle."
This insight spread through me slowly. Wayne Dyer says, "Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change." But this was different-a change in my internal perception had literally shifted my external environment, qualifying as a miracle in A Course in Miracles terms. As long as I was rattled internally, I needed rattles in my dash to help me heal. When my thoughts were healed, the rattles were no longer needed.
The story may seem unremarkable, but that's the point. We often look for big miracles, but the real miracle is the change in our minds that allows us to live joyfully rather than in chaos. We don't need to fix problems; we need our thoughts about problems healed.
Capítulo 3
Understanding Fear's Powerful Grip
To better understand fear and love, imagine two trees. The Fear Tree's branches yield hurt, anger, meanness, violence, and judgment. The Love Tree's branches produce kindness, compassion, creativity, joy, peace, acceptance, and forgiveness. Most of our daily thoughts are rooted in fear, often in subtle ways we don't recognize.
Judgment is the biggest "fruit" on the Fear Tree because it makes us feel separate from others and from God. When we judge someone, our ego is trying to feel better by comparison, but this only disconnects us further from our divine essence.
One of my forty-something business owner clients confessed she doesn't believe she's ever been truly happy. Despite occasional happy days, a cloud of discontent always hovers over her life. She longs to relax and believe everything will be okay but hasn't been able to. This illustrates why the prayer is so crucial-fear confines us to unhappiness.
Years ago, I felt trapped in a plastic bag, able to see out while others could see in, but something was confining me-fear of being myself, expressing my gifts, and letting my light shine. Fear takes firm control because we're taught to be afraid from birth.
While fear serves as our protector against real dangers, there's a crucial difference between making smart decisions and living your whole life feeding from the Fear Tree. Unlike love, which nourishes and supports vitality, fear drains energy and diminishes joy.
A Course in Miracles teaches that only love is real, while fear is an illusion. Any fear-based thought ultimately stems from the core fear "I don't matter." Since we're all children of God, this simply cannot be true-you cannot be an extension of God and not have value.
What seems like natural worry for loved ones is actually a denial of God. If we truly trusted that everything happens according to a plan we can't understand and don't need to control, we wouldn't worry. Caring about others is love; worrying about them is fear.
Just like those in twelve-step programs, we've all hit bottom-we're all addicted to fear. The prayer surrenders our problems to a higher power who can perform healing we can't do ourselves.
Capítulo 4
Why This Prayer Is Revolutionary
Traditional prayers typically ask for something in our external environment to change. We pray for money to pay the mortgage, for someone to recover from illness, or for a specific outcome in our careers. While these prayers may provide temporary relief or occasional results, they don't address the root cause of our suffering or change our internal patterns. They're like treating symptoms without curing the disease.
In contrast, "Please heal my fear-based thoughts" represents a fundamental shift in approach - it asks for ourselves to be rearranged from within, knowing the world around us will naturally shift as a result. This prayer acknowledges that our perception creates our reality. Rather than lifting just one burden or solving one specific problem, this prayer relieves our addiction to fear-based thoughts entirely, freeing us to live with greater peace of mind and creating lasting transformation.
When we ask to be in right alignment with love, everything becomes possible - harmony in relationships, abundance in resources, joy in daily life, and overall well-being. The world shifts from being governed by fear to being governed by love because we're addressing the source rather than the symptoms. This shift affects every aspect of our lives, from our closest relationships to our professional endeavors.
The exact wording makes a significant difference in the prayer's effectiveness. Saying "Please heal my fear-based thoughts" rather than "help me let go of my fears" ensures we're not trying to be part of the solution. This is crucial because we can't solve problems with the same mind that created them - it's like trying to clean dirty water with dirty water. Most people are ineffective at evicting fear through willpower alone - we need to have it done for us by a higher power or universal consciousness.
The term "fear-based" is deliberately comprehensive, casting a wider net than simply "fearful thoughts." It helps us recognize that many thoughts we don't immediately associate with fear - like anger, frustration, jealousy, judgment, or even excessive planning - actually stem from fear. This phrasing acknowledges that no matter how overwhelming or deeply rooted the fear seems, it is just a thought pattern that can be changed. Even chronic anxiety or long-held trauma responses are ultimately based in thought patterns that can be healed.
Fear doesn't originate externally in our circumstances but takes shape in our minds and then shapes our perception of the world. Without divine help or access to a higher consciousness, we're like lamps trying to turn themselves on without being plugged into power - it's impossible. This prayer recognizes our need for connection to something greater than ourselves to truly transform our thought patterns and, consequently, our lives. It's an admission that while we can't heal ourselves through force of will, we can be healed through surrender and openness to divine intervention.
The revolutionary nature of this prayer lies in its simplicity and its focus on the true source of transformation - our thoughts and their alignment with love rather than fear. By changing the foundation of our thinking, we change everything built upon it.
Capítulo 5
Becoming Aware of Fear-Based Thinking
After committing to the prayer practice, I discovered how pervasive fear-based thoughts truly were in daily life. These thoughts manifested in countless ways - from mundane worries about catching colds, car breakdowns, or being late to appointments, to deeper anxieties about relationship stability, career decisions, and financial security. What became clear was that these thoughts weren't isolated incidents but formed an intricate web affecting nearly every aspect of daily living. Becoming aware of these thoughts is the first crucial step toward healing them.
Several practical techniques can help develop this awareness. Journaling thoughts for five to ten minutes each morning reveals recurring patterns and triggers. Walking alone in nature while consciously monitoring your thinking provides clarity without external distractions. Driving without radio, podcast, or phone interruptions creates space for observing mental patterns. Regular check-ins at key moments throughout the day - perhaps during meals, breaks, or transitions - help track thought patterns. Some find setting phone reminders helpful for these periodic awareness checks.
To determine if a thought is fear-based, pay attention to its energetic quality. Ask whether it makes you feel light, expansive, and free, or heavy, contracted, and tired. Physical sensations serve as reliable indicators - stomach tension, shallow breathing, tight shoulders, or a racing heart often signal fear-based thinking. The body's wisdom rarely lies about emotional states.
The practice isn't about forcing positive thinking or denying legitimate concerns. Rather, it involves genuinely asking for mental healing from the constant stream of fear-based thoughts that keep us trapped in limiting patterns. When these thoughts go unaddressed, they drain our emotional reserves, leaving us depleted when facing genuine challenges. This depletion often leads to overreacting to minor irritations - like becoming disproportionately upset over traffic delays or small mistakes.
Fear-based responses frequently include self-blame and magical thinking. A young couple's experience illustrates this perfectly - after their home was burglarized, they questioned whether their excitement and joy about the new house somehow "jinxed" them or invited the break-in. This kind of thinking compounds suffering by adding guilt to already difficult situations. Similar patterns emerge when people blame themselves for illnesses or attribute random misfortunes to their own thoughts or actions.
By consistently asking for fear-based thoughts to be healed, we create new mental space and emotional flexibility. This practice gradually transforms our relationship with fear itself. Instead of being controlled by past fears and traumas, we develop the capacity to respond to life's challenges from a place of greater clarity and wisdom. This shift doesn't happen overnight, but through persistent awareness and gentle correction of fear-based patterns, we begin to change our future by breaking free from the grip of past fears.
Capítulo 6
The Initial Journey: What to Expect
Your experience with the prayer will be uniquely yours. You might see immediate changes or none at all. Initial enthusiasm may quickly fade as your ego resists this practice in every possible way-making you forget the prayer, ridiculing it, manufacturing crises, or creating overwhelming anxiety.
Your ego fears the positive changes that might occur in your relationships, finances, and overall happiness. To overcome this resistance, keep the prayer visible throughout your home and continue the practice regardless of obstacles.
As you incorporate the prayer into daily activities, you'll notice fear messages both from external sources (news, gossip) and internal thoughts. Though fear-based thinking may initially feel overwhelming, persistence will gradually calm this mental chatter.
Rather than finding the "snakes and darkness" your ego warns about, self-discovery reveals "doves and light" as your true essence emerges. The prayer creates a transitional period that may feel disorienting as old beliefs dissolve, but this discomfort signals positive transformation.
Your heart may open to acknowledge and heal old wounds, creating space for self-acceptance and authentic expression of parts you've kept hidden. The ego may create new forms of the same problem-when one issue begins healing, it quickly finds someone else to blame. Like Marilyn, who shifted from blaming her critical husband to blaming her dismissive sister-same issue, different target.
Many report an immediate internal shift when first using the prayer. One woman heard Spirit say, "FINALLY. Now we can really get some things done!" Others find courage to pursue long-delayed dreams, experience calm during agitation, or find rest during sleeplessness.
Capítulo 7
Long-Term Transformation
Using the prayer consistently creates a cumulative effect-not only increasing peace of mind but also decreasing tolerance for fear-based thinking. With practice, recognizing these thoughts, asking for healing, and shifting to loving thoughts becomes easier, allowing more joy and well-being to flow into your life.
Eventually, peace of mind becomes your primary goal, contrary to ego-driven messages about success, possessions, or complicated relationships. Though your ego may initially dismiss this goal as boring, you'll discover that true happiness lies in this internal state of well-being that's independent of external circumstances.
Ironically, once you're no longer driven by fear, the very things you've been seeking-love, career fulfillment, health, financial stability-can flow naturally into your life. You'll also begin noticing more beauty in the world, no longer fixated on problems but free to appreciate the surrounding beauty.
Life situations work out effortlessly when fear no longer blocks your way, allowing you to experience the universe's natural flow of abundance. Serendipitous moments multiply-like arriving at exactly the same time as someone who was delayed in traffic, or finding unexpected money just when you need it.
We waste enormous energy trying to control our relationships, jobs, health, and finances-a futile effort that keeps us trapped in chronic fear. When we finally surrender control, often during crisis moments, we discover what A Course in Miracles promises: "without the ego, all would be love."
Many struggle with finding their purpose because it's hidden under layers of fear-based thoughts: What will others think? Will this be acceptable? Do I deserve it? It's too late for me. Being true to yourself threatens your ego, creating perceived roadblocks everywhere. When you ask for these fear-based thoughts to be healed, answers emerge and support arrives from unexpected places.
Capítulo 8
Real-Life Applications
Fear wears many disguises, putting brakes on our lives and preventing forward movement. But the prayer can transform how we handle life's challenges, as illustrated through several real-life examples.
Shelley faced four simultaneous crises-job loss, home foreclosure, chronic illness, and family changes-yet remained calmer than ever. Using the prayer "hourly, even minute to minute," she found empowerment and courage instead of fear. Without fear driving her decisions, she could thoughtfully consider job options rather than desperately grabbing the first opportunity.
A journalist friend wanted to launch an online business but hesitated to attend a valuable training. Her ego generated logical-sounding excuses-cost, travel inconvenience, uncertainty-all designed to keep her small. The ego can sound like a sensible accountant while actually saying, "I'm terrified you'll learn, grow, and find joy." True joy doesn't come from backup plans but from doing what scares you, as fear often signals exactly what would nourish your higher Self.
Many wonder how the prayer helps with grief and anger after significant loss. One 25-year-old described losing their intelligence, athletic ability, and social skills in a car accident, spending years in therapy with little hope. While anger and grief are natural responses to loss, asking for healing of fears-about what life will look like or how to overcome anger-opens the door to joy.
Love relationships often harbor the most fear. I once sabotaged relationships due to childhood stories of unrequited love that programmed me to expect heartbreak. When Bob entered my life showing steady, practical love, I tried sabotaging that too-until I realized my tears came from fear of losing him. Bob's response-"I don't see a lack of willingness on either of our parts to make this relationship work"-showed me real love wasn't dramatic suffering but steadfast support.
Capítulo 9
Healing Our World Through Healing Our Minds
This prayer can address not just personal issues but global problems. All global problems stem from fear, just as our personal problems do, and no amount of "trying, proving, accomplishing" will eliminate these fears without addressing their root cause. Whether examining international conflicts, environmental crises, or economic inequality, the underlying driver is often fear - fear of scarcity, fear of the other, fear of loss of control.
Imagine the transformative potential of the prayer in various scenarios: domestic violence victims healing deep-seated feelings of unworthiness and finding their inner strength, perpetrators confronting and healing their own insecurities and trauma, disaster survivors discovering resilience and community support, unemployed people opening themselves to unexpected opportunities and career paths, education opponents recognizing that others' growth doesn't diminish their own worth, and long-standing enemies finding common ground through shared humanity and moving toward forgiveness. Each scenario represents a shift from fear-based thinking to love-based possibilities.
While this vision may seem idealistic in our cynical world, this fundamental shift in perspective is how meaningful change begins. The author outlines a practical three-step process: first becoming aware of fear-based thoughts as they arise in daily life, then saying the prayer with genuine intention and openness, and finally witnessing and giving thanks for the miracle that follows - whether subtle or profound. This process creates a feedback loop of positive transformation.
The prayer helps tip the balance from fear, which separates and divides communities and nations, toward love, which unifies and extends beyond artificial boundaries. If the prayer doesn't seem to be working immediately, users should persist, as years or even generations of fear-based thinking may take time to heal. The key is to pay careful attention to feelings and circumstances after saying the prayer, noting increased "serendipity" or flow in daily events, improved relationships, and subtle shifts in perspective.
Over time, practitioners can expect to experience more genuine peace of mind and a deep-seated sense that things will unfold appropriately without excessive worry or control. The prayer won't make one passive or lazy but rather enable one to contribute to the world in new, more effective ways aligned with one's authentic gifts. While life's challenges may not magically disappear, one will experience them fundamentally differently - with grace, wisdom and forgiveness rather than anger or resentment. This transformed perspective ripples outward, affecting families, communities, and potentially the broader world.
The practice becomes particularly powerful when adopted by groups or communities collectively, creating zones of healing that can influence larger social systems. Even small shifts in consciousness, when multiplied across many individuals, have the potential to create meaningful change in our shared reality.
Capítulo 10
The Journey Toward Fearlessness
We often think "If I can just get past this, then life will be good" only to find another challenge immediately taking its place. This endless cycle of anticipating relief, only to face new obstacles, is a common human experience. Despite having a wonderful life filled with achievements, loving relationships, and material comfort, I realized I was "constantly drugged by fear" like most people. My simple yet profound answer became: "Say the prayer. Say the prayer. Say the prayer." This mantra became not just words, but a lifeline to peace.
The imbalance in our collective focus on negativity is striking. Researchers counted 46,000 psychology papers on depression but only 400 on joy, demonstrating how dramatically we get what we look for. This academic bias reflects our broader cultural tendency to fixate on problems rather than possibilities. Rather than seeing life as a constant struggle to fix, we can start with the fundamental belief that our natural state is one of balance and harmony. This shift in perspective alone can transform how we experience daily challenges.
The prayer helps us become "fear-less" by redirecting our attention from the chaotic outside world to our inner connection with God or Spirit. This internal shift is not about denying external reality but about changing our relationship to it. Healing fear is essential to spiritual evolution, allowing us to collaborate with Spirit without the static interference of anxiety and doubt. When fear subsides, our natural wisdom and intuition can emerge more clearly.
Since incorporating the prayer into my daily practice, I've experienced "an ever-expanding capacity for joy" as fear no longer acts as a ceiling limiting how much love and happiness I can experience in my life. While fear-based thoughts don't disappear completely - and shouldn't be expected to - the prayer can dramatically shift the balance toward contentment, more harmonious relationships, and overall well-being. Each time we choose to address our fears through prayer, we strengthen our connection to peace.
The journey toward fearlessness isn't about achieving a perfect state of courage or eliminating all fear - that would be both impossible and unwise. Instead, it's about recognizing fear-based thoughts for what they are: just thoughts that can be healed and transformed. When we make this simple yet powerful request - "Please heal my fear-based thoughts" - we open ourselves to a power greater than our own. This power can transform not just our thinking but our entire experience of life, leading to deeper peace, more authentic relationships, and a greater sense of purpose. The practice becomes a gateway to experiencing life from a place of love rather than fear.
