The mind's power to make illusions manifested this escape through projection, hurling the thought of separation outward in what science calls the "Big Bang." Now everything appears outside us, including God, allowing problems and blame to be projected elsewhere. The universe becomes the ultimate scapegoat, with the body as the ego's crowning achievement-permitting into awareness only what testifies to the reality of separation. Even what we call "evolution" is merely the ego's simultaneous separation through dividing and subdividing cells to create increasingly complex bodies, all equally unreal. The entire cosmos-past and future-is simply a script written by the ego playing out the separation in every conceivable way.

Its thought system-based on sin, guilt, fear, attack, and defense-gets projected outward and acted out in the world. The world we see is merely a movie of our own hatred and guilt, with good experiences mixed in to mask the underlying darkness. Most people, especially spiritual seekers, remain unaware of the murderous thought system operating in their unconscious mind. The unconscious guilt we carry is described as ugly, monstrous, demonic, savage, ghastly, and tormented. This terrible guilt exists because it represents our imagined separation from God and attack on Him, for which we believe we deserve punishment. The world we see, despite its disgusting aspects, is actually an escape mechanism from this worse fate-the guilt in our own mind.

Can perfection be flawed? A primitive form of forgiveness emerges, with the realization that Perfect Love can only be responsible for good, while everything else must come from elsewhere. This stage often manifests as a spiritual awakening where practitioners begin questioning their long-held beliefs about separation and judgment. Many find themselves drawn to teachings about unity consciousness while still experiencing the world through dualistic perception. Non-dualism recognizes that perception requires duality - like sound waves needing a receiver to become sound. Without duality, there can be no interaction, no universe, and consequently, no perceiver. The universe exists only through perception, a trick created by seemingly dividing oneness. While many spiritual seekers claim oneness with God, they erroneously assume God created them and the universe in their present form. This understanding leads to profound shifts in how one views reality, relationships, and personal identity. Practitioners at this level often experience moments of deep unity consciousness while still maintaining some sense of individual self. Pure non-dualism requires an additional step beyond non-dualism - the mind that creates the illusion must choose completely against itself in favor of God. Few teachers or traditions point to this level of realization because it essentially means the end of all seeking, teaching, and individual existence.

Where the ego teaches inevitable loss and necessary sacrifice, the Holy Spirit reveals an eternal truth: there can be no real loss in God's reality - "You cannot lose the gifts your Father gave." This applies to everything from material possessions to relationships to spiritual gifts. While the ego constantly seeks to condemn others through projection - placing guilt outside itself to maintain its innocence - the Holy Spirit recognizes and affirms everyone's fundamental, unalterable innocence. The ego meticulously builds cases against us, collecting evidence of wrongdoing and sin, but the Holy Spirit's Higher Court "will dismiss the case against you" because "there can be no case against a child of God." Perhaps the Holy Spirit's most revolutionary teaching is that "there is no world!" - a profound statement that challenges our most basic assumptions about reality. This doesn't deny our experiences but rather suggests that what we perceive as solid reality is actually a projection of thought. The Holy Spirit perceives angry or attacking people not as threats requiring defense but as suffering souls calling for love and understanding. Under this comprehensive thought system, love becomes the only appropriate response to any situation, bringing remarkable consistency and peace to our daily interactions. The Holy Spirit's vision transcends physical appearance and personality, knowing we are not limited to bodies or human identities but are, like Him, eternal spirit. This understanding establishes that only thoughts we think with God have reality and permanence. Unlike the ego's complex system of categorization that assigns specific identities and constantly judges experiences as good or bad, the Holy Spirit sees everyone as fundamentally the same - holy, perfect, and complete. This vision is totally abstract, embracing all beings with non-specific, all-encompassing love that makes no exceptions and holds no grievances. Through the Holy Spirit's guidance, we learn to relinquish our investment in separation and special relationships, replacing them with holy encounters that reflect our true nature as God's unified creation. This path leads to lasting peace by undoing the ego's thought system of fear and replacing it with love's eternal truth.

   True Forgiveness: The Path Home

   The way out of the ego's trap lies in true forgiveness, which differs fundamentally from the world's version. The world's forgiveness says, "I forgive you for what you did to me," making the error real before pardoning it. The Holy Spirit's forgiveness recognizes that nothing real has happened-"I forgive you for what you didn't really do because it was just my dream." Pursah summarized the major components of forgiveness: remembering we're dreaming, forgiving both our projected images and ourselves, and trusting the Holy Spirit's strength. This aligns with the Course's formula of forgiveness: identifying the cause, letting it go, and allowing it to be replaced. The first two steps require our cooperation, but the final one is the Holy Spirit's responsibility. When we judge dream figures in our world, we fall into the ego's trap of making the dream real. The Course teaches that "you cannot dispel guilt by making it real, and then atoning for it." Instead, the Holy Spirit "dispels it simply through the calm recognition that it has never been." To forgive means "to give ahead of time"-maintaining an attitude of readiness to forgive whatever arises in awareness. Though initially challenging, eventually you'll be able to laugh at anything the ego presents, just as Jesus could. The ego thrives on conflict, and any negative emotional reaction feeds that conflict. Your judgment keeps the ego system alive, but forgiveness frees it. Pursah shared a powerful example from her final lifetime as a university professor. At age fifty, after eighteen years teaching, she faced false accusations when a failing student threatened to claim she demanded sexual favors for grades. Despite her innocence, the scandal destroyed her career. Though initially devastated, her seven years of Course practice helped her remember it was her dream and the dream figures weren't real. She forgave each situation and person one by one, recognizing that if they didn't exist, the guilt could only be in her-but since the separation never occurred, she wasn't guilty either.

This explains deja vu experiences and prophetic dreams, which are glimpses of this completed tapestry. Despite time being an illusion and the journey already complete in eternal reality, Pursah emphasizes that we still have essential work to do in our current experience: "Your part is still what all the rest depends on." Through consistent forgiveness practice and releasing grievances, salvation comes nearer to "each uncertain heart that does not beat as yet in tune with God." This paradox - that everything is complete yet requires our participation - points to the nature of spiritual awakening itself. While the universe's script was predetermined at the moment of the "Big Bang" (which symbolized the mind's original choice for separation), we retain the power to choose the Holy Spirit's loving interpretation rather than the ego's fearful one. The physical universe indeed follows predetermined laws of cause and effect set in motion at that initial instant, yet this doesn't make us victims since we agreed to this script through our identification with the ego mind. Our salvation ultimately comes down to a decision we make in each present moment - choosing between love and fear, truth and illusion. This choice becomes so deeply ingrained through practice that we can make it even while dreaming, transforming our experience from within the illusion itself. The nature of time as an illusion explains many mystical experiences where people report stepping outside of linear time altogether. Near-death experiences, profound meditation states, and spontaneous awakening experiences often share this characteristic of timelessness - providing experiential verification of these teachings. Understanding time's illusory nature helps explain how healing can occur instantaneously when we shift our perception, since all possible versions of reality already exist in the eternal now.

   The End of the Dream

   The absolute truth, according to Arten and Pursah, can be expressed in just two words: "God is." This statement must be understood through pure non-dualism: God is, and nothing else is. In Heaven, "There are no beginnings and no endings in God, Whose universe is Himself." In the book's final moments, Arten and Pursah's bodies merge into brilliant white light as they deliver a unified message about forgiveness leading to peace. They describe how all "children" eventually find their way home to Heaven, welcomed back by God as the false universe disappears "back into the void that was never there." In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Gary practiced forgiveness while acknowledging the tragedy. Arten reminded him that "fairy tales can be pleasant or fearful" but aren't true, comparing the world to fantasies children believe until "reality dawns." Pursah emphasized continuing forgiveness regardless of circumstances, warning against identifying as a body or an American seeking retribution. The book's message is ultimately one of hope.
