Athenians accepted drug use in both public and private spheres, while Romans protected an individual's right to consume whatever substance they deemed necessary. No laws existed against personal drug use-only against using poisons for murder. Drugs in antiquity were conceptualized entirely differently. While modern society views drugs as discrete substances that can be regulated and moralized, the ancients saw them simply as plant parts-no different from rose oil or pine resin. They made no moral distinctions between substances that stopped coughing, caused diarrhea, or induced strange dreams. Drugs weren't merely accepted in antiquity-they were an obsession. More Classical literature survives about pharmaceutical substances than any other single subject, including history, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, art, or religion. Despite this wealth of pharmaceutical knowledge, few modern academics bother to study drug use in antiquity. This represents the last unexplored frontier of ancient history. The fundamental difference between ancient and modern attitudes toward drugs reflects a paradigm shift in Western thinking. Classical civilization didn't impose universal moral standards on inquiry-reason and logic were the tools of thinkers free to form their own impressions. Without a monolithic religious framework dictating morality, drugs weren't illegal because there was no rational way to perceive them as illicit or immoral. Modern academic treatments of Classical drug use often fail to acknowledge this cultural disparity. Twentieth-century Classicists frequently portrayed Greeks and Romans as though they shared contemporary Western values, suggesting drug use was a marginalized evil. This misrepresentation stems from scholars writing histories that promote current cultural agendas rather than historical facts. This approach to scholarship dangerously obscures valuable historical lessons. Rewriting history to justify modern conceptions contradicts the spirit of free inquiry that characterized Greco-Roman civilization. Modern scholars must present Western civilization's founders accurately-including their embrace of drug use as an aspect of personal liberty and pursuit of happiness. Only by acknowledging this history can we prevent deviation from the path of progress forged by these ancient cultures and protect ourselves from those who would curtail civil liberties.
