To identify your personal convictions, examine what you feel, know, think, and will do. Pay attention to what touches your heart deeply, what makes you angry enough to act, what truths you know to be unchangeable, what principles you've learned through experience, and what beliefs you're willing to put into action.
Convictions act as anchors in storms, friends giving assurance during uncertainty, guiding stars when lost, and refreshment when weary. Maxwell's ten principles that guide his life include beliefs about attitude determining altitude, personal growth preceding professional growth, integrity being the only way to live, and success being the love and respect of those closest to him.
To communicate with conviction, you must believe in three things: yourself, your message and audience, and the power of your words. Research shows that optimistic salespeople outsell pessimistic ones by 37 percent. Similarly, if you don't believe in yourself as a communicator, your audience won't believe in you either. You must have confidence, but never cross into arrogance.

As a communicator, Maxwell always prepares two messages simultaneously. Early in his career at Success Seminars, Maxwell observed that most speeches ended with standing ovations but little lasting impact. His father taught him a crucial lesson about putting others first when, after he ruined a trip with his selfishness, he grounded him for a month and required him to add value to someone daily. He taught Maxwell four truths: it's not about you but others; immature people see only from their perspective; mature people see from others' perspectives; and immature people are rarely successful and never significant.
To communicate effectively, connecting must be your primary focus whether speaking to one person or thousands. Five key practices help you connect with others. First, realize you are not the main attraction-the audience is! Jerry Seinfeld understands this about comedy: "If you are doing it for them, you'll be fine. If you're doing it for you...they'll know it...and they won't like it."
Second, make your first impression your best impression. People form impressions in just seven seconds, creating a filter through which everything else is viewed. Maxwell practices the thirty-second rule-saying something encouraging within thirty seconds of meeting someone. The key is focusing on others rather than yourself.
Third, be intentional in seeking to understand their world. Connecting requires finding people where they are before taking them where they need to go. Finally, develop charisma. Charisma isn't an innate trait but a choice that comes from focusing on others first. Maxwell confesses that as a young communicator, he mistakenly focused on imitating others rather than asking "What do I have that my audience wants?" Only after discovering his authentic voice did his messages gain weight and influence.
Trying to improve weaknesses rather than leveraging strengths is ultimately counterproductive, illustrated by George H. Reavis's fable "The Animal School," where animals forced to excel in areas contrary to their natural abilities became mediocre overall. In communication, average doesn't inspire-people want to be engaged, inspired, and entertained by speakers who lead with their strengths.
To leverage your strengths as a communicator, you must first identify them, particularly examining your ability in three key areas. First, leverage the strength that best helps you connect. The most effective starting point is identifying which of the four primary connection points works best for you: heart, help, humor, or hope. Maxwell advises leading with your strongest connection point 99 percent of the time and returning to it frequently throughout your presentation.
Heart creates an emotional connection through authentic, personal, and vulnerable communication. It comes from genuine empathy rather than manipulation, drawing people to you and building trust. Help means adding practical value by giving people tools to improve their lives-equipping them to change what they see, think, and do. Humor, perhaps the most difficult connection strength unless naturally funny, involves seeing life's absurd side and using unexpected twists to make people laugh. Hope breathes life into people by helping them see possibilities for a better today, future, and self.
Second, leverage the natural talents that help you succeed. Success comes not from trying to be anything you want, but from maximizing who you already are. The formula is simple: Talent (natural ways of thinking, feeling, or behaving) multiplied by Investment (practice, skills development, knowledge) equals Strength (consistent near-perfect performance).
Third, leverage your skills that can help others succeed. Maxwell's most developed skills fall into five categories he calls CLEAR: Communication, Leadership, Equipping, Attitude, and Relationships. He encourages speakers to identify their own areas of knowledge, experience, skill, and success, then tap into them when speaking to help others succeed.

Before a speaker begins, audience members have a mindset ranging from dread to indifference to curiosity to anticipation. The speaker's job is to create positive anticipation and then deliver on it, keeping listeners engaged throughout the presentation.
Building audience anticipation starts with the speaker's own mindset. Maxwell discovered that to generate excitement in others, he needed to be excited himself. This requires a posture of continual improvement-a passion to learn more, work ethic to become more, and excitement to share more. With a growth mindset and rising skill, audience anticipation naturally increases over time.
To change your sense of anticipation, you must change your perspective. Maxwell introduces three perspectives that can transform how you approach communication. First, believe you can communicate. Your first and most important audience is yourself, and your most crucial communication tools are the words you say to yourself. Creating a daily self-worth statement shapes how you view yourself and your intentions.
Second, believe you have something to give. Despite his optimistic personality creating blind spots, it generates excitement about his work-Maxwell always believes his current message is "the best I've ever written." Professional communicators typically have three to seven key themes they return to repeatedly. Once you discover your themes and create messages based on your convictions, your confidence and anticipation will naturally increase.
Third, believe people can and want to improve their lives. Communicating with people because you believe they have value is fundamentally different from merely communicating to them. Research shows we get the most from others when we believe in them-we treat them better, provide more opportunities, give helpful feedback, and invest more teaching time.
Once you have the right mindset of anticipation, you can employ practices that create an atmosphere of anticipation in your audience. Like Louis L'Amour advised writers, "The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on." From invitation to delivery, your anticipation must be flowing-only you can turn it on. When anticipation flows, creativity flows with it, generating more ideas during preparation and making you more excited about your message.
Your communication should create the same anticipation as dining at a world-class restaurant. Like Maxwell's experience at Louis XV in Monte Carlo, where everything from the setting to the service built anticipation for each course, you should create atmosphere and signal what's coming. As speaker, you're chef, maitre d', and server combined.
In relationships, we're either fountains who overflow onto others or drains who deplete their energy. As a speaker, think of yourself as a fountain who gives to others. People can name famous fountains worldwide but not famous drains-because there aren't any! To build anticipation, maintain positivity and be ready to overflow with it.
Your expectations largely determine your reality. If you expect life to give you "no," that's what you'll get. If you expect "yes," you'll receive it. Living on the other side of "yes" opens you to nearly limitless possibilities. Research shows people who believe in themselves use more of their brains, approaching problems from multiple angles.

When Maxwell speaks, his strategy is straightforward: connect with people and keep content simple, natural, and easy to understand. Communicators take something complicated and make it simple-that's the Law of Simplicity. Unfortunately, many educational institutions reward complexity rather than simplicity, as he learned in college when he delivered an overly complex theological message that impressed professors but bored students.
In college, Maxwell was trained to value complexity, delivering a message titled "The Incompatibility of Sin and Sonship" filled with obscure problems and complex ideas. He received an award from professors but bored students. This approach failed miserably with his first congregation of farmers, who didn't want obscure Greek word studies-they wanted what songwriter Harlan Howard called "three chords and the truth." No matter your audience, they want to understand you easily and apply what you tell them.
Simplicity works in all areas of life. Basketball coach Red Auerbach, who won nine NBA championships with the Boston Celtics, attributed his success to "effective simplicity," using just seven different plays. Maxwell applies this principle by focusing on only five areas: Values (his foundation for decision-making), Principles (his "North Star" guidelines), Priorities (keeping the main thing the main thing), Systems (organized approaches that help achieve goals efficiently), and Intentionality (the bridge from good intentions to good actions).
His friend Kevin Myers teaches that communication falls into three categories: simplistic, complex, and simple. Being simplistic means ignoring genuine complexity and offering too-easy solutions-like saying "All you need is a title to lead" or "Experience is the best teacher." Most issues and problems are genuinely complex, requiring sustained thinking to understand. The real achievement comes in taking that complexity and expressing it simply.
As Einstein reportedly said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Simple communication is both deep and fast, answering many questions, embracing proven thought, and offering elegant solutions. Unlike simplistic approaches that are shallow, simple communication distills complex ideas into clear, accessible wisdom.
If you want to be a great communicator, you need to focus on three key elements. First, clarity-your message should be understandable to an eighth-grader who could then explain it to someone else. Winston Churchill exemplified this with his powerful yet clear speeches, while C.S. Lewis noted that if you cannot translate your thoughts into uneducated language, your thoughts were confused.
Second, brevity-it's not about the number of words but their impact. The Lord's Prayer contains just 56 words, Lincoln's Gettysburg Address only 268, yet both are profoundly effective. Presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan learned this lesson when writing for Reagan, creating his powerful 650-word Challenger disaster speech that consoled a nation in just a few paragraphs.
Third, focus-as MIT professor John Maeda wrote, "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful." A focused communication has everything it needs and nothing else. There's a reason TED Talks are limited to eighteen minutes-they want speakers to do the work of making communication clear, brief, and focused. Remember: less is more, clarity is power, clear is kind, and everything must be as simple as possible. Stop trying to impress your audience and start helping them by getting to your point clearly and concisely.

People may forget what you say, but they never forget how you make them feel. Maxwell experienced this firsthand when meeting Maya Angelou, whose warmth and genuine interest in him left him feeling empowered and valued despite her celebrity status. To practice the Law of Adding Value as a communicator, you must live good values yourself and then add value to others.
Maxwell learned to value people through several key experiences that shaped his understanding of this principle. His father was the ultimate people person who never rushed through crowds, always stopping to hug or encourage someone. When he was ninety, he told Maxwell, "Son, isn't it wonderful that the older we get, the more we love people?" His best advice on college graduation day was, "Every day, value people, believe in them, and unconditionally love them."
Hearing Zig Ziglar say, "If you will help people get what they want, they will help you get what you want" changed Maxwell's life. He shifted from expecting others to help him first to making adding value his priority without expecting anything in return. This principle works across professions-from salespeople and speakers to managers and leaders. When you put others first, they naturally want to help you succeed.
After the traumatic experience of firing a staff member he had mentored and loved, Maxwell built emotional walls and kept everyone at arm's length. You must allow others to get close to you to add value to them.
Reading the Gospels showed Maxwell how Jesus valued everyone-especially those others rejected. He loved tax collectors, Samaritans, adulterers, lepers, and thieves. While religious leaders built walls to exclude people, Jesus built relational bridges to include them. This taught him he can't be like him unless he loves everyone-including those who don't look, act, think, or believe like him.
Beyond wanting to add value to people, you must take action. Most people begin their day wondering "What will I receive today?" but value-adders ask "What will I give today?" For fifty years, Maxwell has intentionally added value to others, focusing on planting seeds now for a future harvest that would benefit them, their families, and communities.
Our perspective influences our beliefs, which determine our behavior. A scarcity mindset makes us think "What can I spare?" while an abundance perspective asks "What can I share?" Similarly, how we view people affects how we treat them. When we find common ground with people and appreciate their differences, we're more likely to treat them well.
Maxwell assumes every person is a 10 out of 10 when he meets them. Everyone deserves a good start. When he addresses an audience, he sees a sea of 10s, expecting the best from each person. Our natural inclination is to size people up and hold onto those initial judgments, but this means missing talents based on superficial information.
People won't receive anything from those they don't like. Become more likable by caring about people and serving them-by wanting more for them than from them. As Simon Sinek says, "People don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it." Leaders need to love their people before trying to lead them.
Albert Einstein advised, "Try not to become men of success. Rather, become men of value." Most people chase success, but Maxwell encourages running a different race focused on adding value to others. In his late fifties, he wrote a prayer expressing his desire to be known as available rather than hardworking, compassionate more than competent, content not driven, generous instead of rich, and sacrificial instead of successful.
When leaders serve first, they make a real difference. Good leaders and communicators are servants who value people. What Maxwell didn't know as a young man was that adding value acts like a boomerang. What he thought was simply the right thing to do became part of his identity.
