Boarding the plane, I found myself scrutinizing fellow passengers with newfound suspicion - exactly what the terrorists had intended.
My first post-9/11 assignments revealed how subdued sporting events had become. At stadiums, cheers were muted as people seemed to be going through motions, perhaps feeling guilty for attending games while the world fell apart. For Today, I interviewed Ray Charles about "America the Beautiful," which had become something like our new national anthem. Charles reflected poignantly, saying perhaps he was "better off not seeing all this devastation."
With producer Eddie Feibischoff, I visited Ground Zero before Game 3 of the World Series. The rubble still smoldered, with twisted iron and debris everywhere. The smell was indescribable, and the scene was simultaneously loud with rescue efforts yet eerily quiet among bystanders. We both started crying.
At Yankee Stadium on October 30, 2001, I witnessed President George W. Bush throw out the first pitch of Game 3 - a moment as powerful as anything in my career. The young president, who had been dealt this terrible tragedy, walked alone to the mound as the crowd chanted "U-S-A!" Years later, with Steve Wynn's help connecting us, Bush agreed to participate in a documentary about that first pitch, wanting to remind Americans about 9/11 and create content for his presidential library.
