Ésquilo (c. 525–456 a.C.) foi um antigo tragediógrafo grego e autor de Prometeu Acorrentado, celebrado como o "pai da tragédia". Nascido em Elêusis, ele revolucionou o teatro grego ao introduzir múltiplos personagens que podiam interagir diretamente, expandindo para além do formato tradicional de um único ator e coro.

Prometeu Acorrentado exemplifica sua exploração de temas atemporais: a rebelião contra a tirania, o embate entre o poder e a razão, e o preço da consciência individual — assuntos que ressoavam profundamente com a transformação democrática de Atenas.

Ésquilo escreveu aproximadamente de 70 a 90 peças, embora apenas sete sobrevivam completas, incluindo sua obra-prima, a trilogia Oresteia.
