On January 26, 1979, at 11:16 p.m., emergency services responded to a call at 13 West Fifty-fourth Street. Accounts of the scene varied-police found him clothed amid work papers, while paramedics reported finding him nude with unfinished Chinese food nearby. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. His February 2 funeral at Riverside Church drew twenty-two hundred mourners, including President Carter, Gerald Ford, and representatives from forty-four nations.
