Ancient legends about witches and vampires were likely attempts to explain incomprehensible crimes to past communities.
Serial killers are almost exclusively male and represent the most difficult criminals to capture because their motivations are complex and they lack normal feelings like compassion or remorse. To identify them, we must learn to think like them.
The analysis of criminal behavior has literary roots: from Edgar Allan Poe's C. August Dupin, who first attempted to "enter the soul of his opponent," to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. It wasn't until the 1950s that this technique moved from literature to reality, when Dr. James Brussel created a surprisingly accurate profile of New York's "Mad Bomber," George Metesky.
To know the criminal, it's essential to study their crime and put yourself in the victim's shoes. In a Georgia murder case, understanding a fourteen-year-old rape and murder victim's personality allowed me to realize the killer hadn't premeditated the murder but had reacted to the surprise of not being welcomed as he imagined. My profile led to the arrest of the perpetrator, who awaits execution.
Our analysis divides into three phases: what happened, why it happened in that specific way, and who might have committed this crime for these reasons. This approach transformed how law enforcement hunts predators-focusing not just on physical evidence, but on the psychological fingerprints left at every crime scene.

From Rookie to Profiler
Born in Brooklyn to a typographer father and a mother whose maiden name was Holmes, I grew up with my academically gifted sister Arlene. When I was eight, we moved to Hempstead, Long Island. Though an average student, I excelled at storytelling and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian.
My height gave me an edge in high school sports, where I learned the power of psychological intimidation as a pitcher and football player. At eighteen, working as a bouncer, I developed skills in reading body language and managing confrontations-abilities that would later prove valuable in law enforcement.
After a failed attempt at veterinary school in Montana and various jobs including bodyguard work, I joined the Air Force to avoid the Vietnam draft. Even local police accused us of sensationalism and stealing credit. Paradoxically, much of my practical training came from local officers who took us under their protection.
Bank robberies were commonplace, with two or three incidents every Friday. Assigned to the Strategic Intervention Unit in the Fugitive Squad, I mainly dealt with Vietnam War deserters. It was dangerous work-I once narrowly avoided being stabbed by a deserter during an arrest.
In Detroit and later Milwaukee, I developed an interest in the mental processes behind crimes. I always questioned criminals about their methods, discovering that the most effective ones carefully studied their targets and followed precise patterns that we could use to prevent future crimes.
A significant revelation occurred during an operation against bookmakers on Super Bowl day. While taking a distinguished-looking arrestee to the station, he confided: "We're made this way, John, and you won't stop us." Pointing to two raindrops on the window, he explained that for them, it was enough to bet on which would reach the bottom first. That simple phrase-"We're made this way"-made me understand that criminals are inherently driven to behave in certain ways. This concept became fundamental to my future work, leading me to define the "signature" as the unique element that remains constant in serial crimes, distinguishing it from the modus operandi that can change. This concept would later form the basis for the entire activity of the Investigative Support Unit.

Kemper, imprisoned for multiple life sentences, had shown disturbing behavior since childhood. At 14, he killed both grandparents, simply stating: "I wondered what it would feel like to shoot Grandma." When we met him, his imposing size and high intelligence (IQ 145) were striking. He spoke clinically about his crimes, showing emotion only when discussing his mother's abuse.
His mother Clarnell, though respected at the university, had psychologically tormented him, locking him in the basement at night and making him feel worthless. This fueled his resentment and eventual crimes. Like many serial killers we'd later encounter, Kemper was drawn to law enforcement, frequenting police hangouts to feel powerful and gather investigation details.
Our analysis revealed distinct behavioral patterns before and after his violent acts. Initially categorized as a sexual sadist, we discovered his post-mortem mutilations were more fetishistic, stemming from a desire for possession. His body disposal evolved from careful concealment to near-public display, mocking the community that rejected him.
Despite his heinous crimes, Kemper proved articulate and personable during our many conversations - highlighting how such killers can be charming and deceptive, even fooling professionals.

His talent lay in identifying vulnerable targets, particularly young women with father issues, offering them a mix of paternal guidance, sex, and drug-induced spirituality.
Our criminal analysis framework evolved into three key questions: what happened, why it happened that way, and who might commit such crimes. This approach revolutionized law enforcement by considering both physical and psychological evidence left at crime scenes.
By 1979, profiling requests had reached fifty cases annually, doubling the next year. I transitioned from teaching to full-time profiling, handling murders and occasionally rapes when Roy Hazelwood was unavailable. As our informal service grew into an institution, I became program manager for criminal personality analysis, coordinating with operational offices nationwide.
To formalize our research, Roy Hazelwood introduced me to Dr. Ann Burgess, a University of Pennsylvania professor specializing in sexual violence. Recognizing our work's potential impact, comparable to the DSM's influence on mental health, Ann secured $400,000 from the National Institute of Justice. Our ambitious project aimed to interview 36-40 inmates using a comprehensive 57-page questionnaire. While Bob managed funding and we conducted interviews, Ann would analyze the data for publication. To conduct effective interviews, we needed thorough preparation and sharp interpretation skills. Serial killers are masterful manipulators, but they share common traits - having ample time to reflect, they could recall their crimes in detail. Our challenge was detecting deception.
Richard Speck, who murdered eight nursing students in Chicago in 1966, insisted he wasn't a serial killer. He was technically correct - as a mass murderer, he killed multiple victims in a single event. What began as a robbery escalated when he had control of his victims. One nurse, Corazon Amurao, survived by hiding when Speck lost count. His "born to raise hell" tattoo led to his capture after a failed suicide attempt.
Jerry Brudos's criminal path began with a shoe fetish at age five. His mother's harsh punishment for finding high heels sparked a pattern of stealing women's shoes and lingerie. After assaults and military discharge for mental issues, he murdered four women between 1968-69. His first victim was Linda Slawson, whose foot he preserved wearing a high heel. He later killed three more women, making plastic molds of their breasts. Student testimonies led to his capture.
Monte Ralph Rissell, who killed five women as a teenager, emerged from a broken home with neglect and violence. His first murder occurred after a relationship ended - he attacked a prostitute whose behavior confirmed his belief that "all women were whores."
Our 1983 study of thirty-six violent criminals and their victims led to a groundbreaking classification system linking criminal psychology to crime scene evidence. While our 1988 essay "Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives" expanded these findings, we acknowledged that studying the criminal mind remains an ongoing challenge - we must learn faster than the killers who learn from each crime.

The Profiler's Art
In 1980, reading about an elderly woman raped and beaten in my local community, I decided to offer my help to the authorities despite the case not falling under federal jurisdiction. Examining the photographs, I traced a profile of the aggressor: a teenager between 16-17 years old, unkempt, kicked out of home that night, who knew the victim from having done some odd jobs for her. I explained that the assault was impulsive, not planned, motivated by insecurity and anger, and that after the attack, the aggressor had lingered to eat and drink. To my surprise, investigators revealed that a psychiatrist had provided an almost identical profile weeks earlier.
This episode demonstrates how my approach consists of immersing myself psychologically and emotionally in the case, trying to think like the criminal. It's not a purely scientific process nor completely explainable, but a combination of experience, intuition, and creativity that goes beyond what a computer could do.
When I presented my profile to the authorities in the "Trail Killer" case, I challenged the idea that the murderer was charming and sophisticated. I argued instead that he was antisocial, insecure, incapable of normal interactions, and that he performed manual labor. I added, to great skepticism from those present, that he suffered from a speech impediment-probably stuttering-that caused him embarrassment in social interactions and drove him to attack in isolated places.
The case of Francine Elveson, a 26-year-old special education teacher with kyphoscoliosis, represented an example of the effectiveness of our profiling approach. Francine was found brutally murdered on the top floor landing of her Bronx apartment building. The body had been arranged with arms and legs spread, wrists and ankles tied post-mortem with a belt and nylon stockings. The nipples had been cut off and positioned on the chest, underwear covered her face, and she had bite marks on her thighs and knees. The killer had inserted objects into the vagina, written threatening messages on the body ("You can't stop me" and "Fuck you") and defecated next to the corpse.
Based on the killer's behavior, I developed a profile: white male between 25-35 years old, unkempt, unemployed, nocturnal, residing near the crime scene with elderly parents or relatives. I predicted that he was socially isolated, with low self-esteem, psychiatric problems, and a collection of sadomasochistic pornographic material. Despite a negroid hair found on the body (later resulting from contamination), I insisted that the killer was white.
The profile led to the arrest of Carmine Calabro, a thirty-year-old unemployed actor who lived with his widowed father in the same building as the Elvesons. Despite his apparent alibi (he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital), it was discovered that he had left without authorization the evening before the murder. His dental impressions matched the bite marks on Francine's body, leading to his conviction to 25 years. In prison, Calabro had all his teeth extracted "so they couldn't accuse me again," confirming his profound mental disturbance.

The Atlanta Child Murders
In winter 1981, Atlanta faced a series of murders that began eighteen months earlier, becoming one of America's most publicized manhunts. The case started in July 1979 with the discovery of Alfred Evans (13) and Edward Smith (14), both African American. Over the following months, multiple children were found dead or went missing, including Yusef Bell (9), Milton Harvey (14), and several others ranging from 8 to 14 years old.
Initially disconnected, the cases were linked after victims' parents, led by Camille Bell, pressured authorities to act. A task force was established, and the FBI joined when Mayor Maynard Jackson requested help, designating it as ATKID.
Roy Hazelwood and I analyzed the case, examining documentation, interviewing families, and visiting crime scenes. Against popular theories of racial motivation, we profiled the killer as a black male, 25-29 years old, who admired police, owned a police-type car and dog, and was likely sexually inadequate. He probably used music or acting to lure victims and couldn't maintain relationships.
A breakthrough came when I noticed the killer responding to media coverage. After a false lead at Sigmon Road, a body appeared there-the killer was taunting police. When the medical examiner revealed matching fibers on six victims, I predicted the killer would switch to disposing bodies in rivers to eliminate evidence. This proved accurate with the next three victims-Curtis Walker, Timmie Hill, and Eddie Duncan.
Wayne Williams matched our profile perfectly. He admired police, had impersonated an agent, owned a German shepherd, and was seen at key locations. His case unraveled during trial when he instinctively responded "No" to the prosecutor's question about being afraid while killing the children, before erupting in anger.
On February 27, after eleven hours of deliberation, the jury found Williams guilty, resulting in two life sentences. Though the case earned me both a reprimand and a modest commendation, it proved pivotal for our unit, establishing our credibility with law enforcement worldwide.

The Predator's Signature
In 1983, we consulted on Robert Hansen's case - a respected Anchorage baker suspected of serial killings. The investigation began when a seventeen-year-old prostitute escaped Hansen's attempted abduction, still wearing handcuffs. Hansen, a forty-five-year-old married father of two, denied everything and provided an alibi backed by business associates. However, authorities linked him to several unsolved murders: an unidentified woman, Joanne Messina, Sherry Morrow, and Paola Golding. The victims were killed with a Ruger Mini-14 rifle, and some were found naked.
When consulting on the case, I analyzed the crimes before learning about the suspect to avoid bias. I concluded that Hansen, like the fictional General Zaroff, had escalated from hunting animals to hunting humans, specifically targeting prostitutes whom he viewed as disposable. I predicted we'd find hidden weapons and victim "souvenirs" in his home.
The subsequent search confirmed my analysis: investigators discovered a Ruger Mini-14, hunting trophies, victims' jewelry, and a map marking burial sites. Hansen confessed to four murders, claiming he "punished" prostitutes who "tried to take control." He received a 499-year sentence.
This case exemplifies two crucial forensic concepts: modus operandi and signature. The modus operandi (MO) is the learned behavior used to execute the crime - it's dynamic and evolves with experience. The "signature" - a term I introduced - represents what the perpetrator must do for psychological satisfaction. It remains constant and reveals their personality.
For example, a Texas robber who photographed naked hostages displayed a signature behavior - unnecessary actions that increased risk. In contrast, a Michigan robber who made hostages undress merely to prevent identification demonstrated practical MO. This distinction helps law enforcement connect related crimes and apprehend serial offenders.

Family Violence and Deception
One exemplary case of how the FBI analyzes family crimes emerges when Gregg McCrary receives a call about a missing child. The mother claims he was kidnapped while she was in the bathroom, but details such as her choice of words ("kidnapped" instead of "missing") and the finding of a small glove mailed by post make McCrary suspicious. These elements don't correspond to the behavior of a real kidnapper, leading to the conclusion that the mother herself killed her son-a fact later confirmed by her confession. The motive? The young woman wanted to free herself from the child to start a new relationship with a man who didn't want to raise someone else's son.
In the 1986 case of Betty Wolsieffer, police in Wilkes-Barre found dentist Glen Wolsieffer injured and his wife Betty strangled in their home. Glen claimed that an intruder had entered, assaulted him, and then killed his wife while their five-year-old daughter slept in the next room. But numerous elements contradicted this version: the ladder used to enter had been positioned upside down, nothing had been stolen, and Glen's injuries were superficial. Moreover, neither he nor his brother Neil (who lived across the street and whom Glen had called) had gone up to check on Betty and the child.
As the investigation progressed, Glen continued to modify his version, admitting extramarital relationships that Betty no longer tolerated. His brother Neil, who was to be interrogated, died in a car accident while leaving the courthouse, in circumstances that suggested a possible suicide. The police collected much circumstantial evidence against Glen but needed an expert to declare that the crime had been committed by a person who knew the victim. Douglas analyzed the case and concluded that it was a personal murder, highlighting inconsistencies such as the poorly positioned ladder and the illogic of the intruder's behavior.
In 1989 in Boston, Charles Stuart reported that he and his pregnant wife Carol had been assaulted by a black man while returning from a natural childbirth class. Carol died, the baby survived only a few weeks, and Charles was seriously injured. The police stopped numerous African American suspects, and Charles identified one. However, his version began to show inconsistencies when he asked his brother Matthew to help him dispose of a bag containing the allegedly stolen items. Before he could be formally accused of murder, Charles committed suicide by jumping from a bridge.
Douglas emphasizes that, as in the Wolsieffer case, when an aggressor first strikes the person who represents the least threat (almost always a woman), there's always a reason to discover. Investigators must avoid emotional involvement with alleged victims and maintain objectivity, always asking themselves the question: "What kind of person could have committed such an action?"

God Wants You to Join Shari Faye
In May 1985, Shari Faye Smith, a high school senior, was kidnapped in front of her mailbox at her home in Columbia, South Carolina. Sheriff Jim Metts organized a massive search and contacted the FBI when the family received a call from the kidnapper, who spoke with a distorted voice and didn't ask for any ransom. FBI agents Wright and Walker analyzed the case, concluding that the kidnapper was a sophisticated and dangerous personality, and feared that the girl was already dead.
The family received a heartbreaking farewell letter written by Shari, entitled "Last Will and Testament," in which the girl expressed her love for her family and boyfriend Richard, asking them not to be discouraged and to remain united in faith. Despite FBI agents being convinced that it was now a murder case, the Smith family continued to hope. The kidnapper called several times, alternating friendly tones with disturbing statements such as "Shari is part of me. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Now our souls are one." Following FBI advice, the family tried to maintain contact with the kidnapper, who eventually gave precise directions to find Shari's body, found twenty kilometers from home.
From the analysis of the crime scene and the phone calls, we developed a detailed profile: a white man in his twenties or thirties, intelligent but socially inadequate, probably married young with a rapidly failed marriage. He lived alone or with his parents, had a history of sexual offenses, was meticulous and obsessed with cleanliness, compulsively took notes, and drove a well-maintained car no more than three years old. His personality oscillated between arrogance and deep insecurity. He knew the area well, suggesting he was local, and possessed knowledge of electronics, perhaps working in the construction sector. During phone calls, he read texts prepared in advance and, if interrupted, lost his train of thought-a sign of a rigid and obsessive personality.
The breakthrough came when the Sheppards identified Larry Gene Bell as a suspect. Bell perfectly matched the profile: a divorced thirty-year-old, shy and meticulous, with a history of sexual offenses. During the search of his home, investigators found perfectly aligned shoes, neatly arranged objects, Shari's hair in the bed, and a stamp identical to the one used for the spiritual testament. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Bell didn't immediately confess, but during a conversation with Douglas admitted that "the bad Larry Gene Bell" could have committed those crimes. He was tried and sentenced to death for both murders, remaining on death row while continuing to keep his cell in perfect order.

The 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders present a different challenge, with random victims dying from cyanide-laced capsules. The profile suggests a white male, 25-30, solitary, working near authority, with military background and psychiatric history. Investigation strategies include humanizing victims through media and monitoring cemeteries to provoke the perpetrator's response.
In a Texas case, a bank president receives threats about a planted bomb and his wife's alleged kidnapping. The extortionist cleverly arranged for the wife to be unavailable and created a legitimate reason for his presence during the money transfer. This differs from typical kidnapping cases, where sociopathic perpetrators often accept the possibility of killing their victims, as happened with an Exxon vice president who died in captivity.
The section concludes with Kris Welles's case, highlighting how stalking can affect anyone public-facing, particularly women. Her assault by colleague Wayne Nance, later revealed as a serial killer, shows how victims can become survivors, though their recovery often depends on legal outcomes.

The case echoed Ted Bundy's 1974 crimes, prompting Major Richard Kraske to request FBI assistance.
My profile described the killer as a white male, physically strong, under-employed, with an inadequate personality and intimate knowledge of the river. He was a remorseless man with a punitive mission against women he considered "scum." A forty-four-year-old taxi driver became the primary suspect after inserting himself into the investigation, but premature interrogation without proper coordination compromised the case.
In 1988, I analyzed the Jack the Ripper case for a television broadcast. The murders, occurring between August and November 1888 in London's East End, showed escalating brutality. Applying modern profiling techniques, Roy Hazelwood and I identified Aaron Kosminski as the most likely suspect - a socially inadequate loner who could blend into the environment and acted on impulse.
