He committed to multiple client meetings daily but missed many while struggling with roundabouts and driving on the "opposite" side of the road. When not causing havoc on roads, he disrupted office processes with direct-mail campaigns, client events, and challenging every aspect of the status quo. His whirlwind created momentum, but to what end remains uncertain. The growth from Miller's time in the U.K. was incalculable, even though he was considerably in over his head. Bob was actually investing in him-not just for the U.K. transition, but for the future of the company and Miller's own future. Great leaders do that. He extended trust beyond what Miller deserved, and the lasting impact has been instructive in Miller's own leadership legacy. He attempts, at every opportunity, to extend trust to team members as it's been extended to him throughout his life.

The Balancing Act: Work and Life Integration

A secret is floating around the corporate world called "work/life balance." It's a turn of phrase you're supposed to talk about as a vital company value. But the secret is that we don't mean it. Not really. It's well understood that if you really want to succeed as a leader, you clock as many hours as you can-be the first to arrive at the office and the last to leave, life balance be damned. According to research published in 2018, 24 percent of Americans reported they hadn't taken a vacation in more than a year, and 52 percent reported having unused vacation days at the end of 2017. It wasn't always this way. Thirty years ago, Miller's father was a mid-level leader at a Fortune 500 company. Miller only remembers his father's office calling him at home once or twice during three decades. Until the early '90s, work was finished when you left the office. You weren't expected to engage until the next workday. Without the energizing and renewing activities outside the office, you can't be "whole" or fulfilled. And if you're not fulfilled in multiple areas of your life, you won't be as productive at work. Studies even link an active sex life to improved job satisfaction and engagement at work. The more fulfilled you are, the more productive you'll be, requiring fewer hours at work. It's a vicious or virtuous cycle, depending on where you jump on. It took Miller a while to figure this out. Has he mastered it? Not even close. Thanks to technology, it's never been more difficult to find work/life balance-and it will only get worse. The line between work and life is mostly blurred beyond distinction. As enterprises need global presence to compete, the expectation increases that we stay connected. Often in exchange for being constantly available, many are afforded flexible work environments, including "take what you need" vacation policies. But Miller would bet there's more emphasis on "deliver your results" than "take what you need." How many took more than ten vacation days last year? He didn't-either from habit of saying yes or believing time off would make him less productive. When leaders themselves don't have a life, they look pitiful and set a low standard for others. Don't forget, it's your life, so don't spend it all at work. No one on their deathbed ever wished they'd spent more time at the office. Your team members will draw conclusions about what's acceptable based on what you say and do. If you want them to live balanced lives allowing renewal, purpose, and increased productivity, you must model it yourself. Life balance doesn't necessarily mean taking a vacation. Leaders need time to invest in themselves, develop hobbies, and work on health and relationships. We need to become more multidimensional by not letting jobs define us. We've all experienced seasons leaning toward careers-that's okay if limited to a season. Remember, seasons pass, or at least they should.
