Despite her family's warnings about corporate America's coldness, Drew pursued the prestige of working for a massive entertainment company. But her hard-earned confidence quickly crumbled as the new person in a patriarchal office environment where her ideas were stolen without credit and advancement seemed arbitrarily delayed. Coworkers insisted this was normal-start at the bottom, "eat shit" for a while, then move up. But seeing a woman with her same title passed over for promotion for eight years confirmed her gut feeling that something was deeply wrong. Two weeks after being fired, COVID shut down the world. Without daily routines, Drew realized she'd tied her entire worth to a job title. She'd built her identity around professional achievement, forgetting that jobs-like awful men-will drain your energy, question your worth, and convince you everything is your fault when things end badly. Work can feel validating when you're succeeding, but the workplace is fickle. Drew sacrificed boundaries for her job, rarely seeing Pili as they became ships passing in the night.
