The question isn't whether these parallels exist, but whether we can learn from them to avoid repeating catastrophic mistakes. The silence of the German Church in the face of rising evil mirrors the American Church's silence today on crucial moral issues.
America has historically played a central role in world affairs, largely for good because of our churches. Our exceptionalism stems not from American blood but from Christ's blood and our national acknowledgment of it. As Alexis de Tocqueville observed, America's churches uniquely supported religious liberty rather than opposing it as in other nations. This has allowed America to be a beacon of freedom globally.
Given America's outsized global influence, our failure to learn from Germany's church would bring consequences far worse than the horrors that befell the world then. God has sovereignly chosen America to hold liberty's torch, placing an enormous responsibility on the Church. As Abraham Lincoln noted, we are God's "almost chosen people" with an almost unbearable burden. This isn't cause for pride but for humble service.
The forces we face today are even more insidious than those of 1930s Germany-not hyper-nationalistic but globalist, with atheistic Marxist ideology at their core. Critical Race Theory, radical gender ideology, and pro-abortion movements are fundamentally anti-God and anti-human, attacking the family, marriage, and America's role in spreading Gospel values. These movements have infiltrated our culture while masquerading as champions of biblical values for the underdog. They've silenced opposition by convincing many Christians that fighting them means abandoning the Gospel for politics-a deception designed to neutralize truth-speakers.
The American Church has increasingly retreated from public life into what it mistakenly considers a proper "religious" sphere. This retreat seems to apologize for being "too political" in previous decades when criticized by secular media. Many churches, weary of culture wars, decided to focus on "strictly theological issues"-as though the Gospel could ever be kept from touching all aspects of human life.
This retreat betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of religious liberty in America, which has always meant more than private worship-it guarantees "free exercise" of faith everywhere. The idea that Christians shouldn't speak boldly about biblical views on sexuality, the unborn, or human freedom betrays this heritage. William Wilberforce was told to keep his anti-slavery views private as "religious," but knew God called him to public action. Similarly, Bonhoeffer refused to stay silent about Nazi persecution of Jews despite being told not to be "political."

The German Church's Fatal Silence
To understand our current predicament, we must examine the German Church's failures in the 1930s. Most American Christians know the German Church "didn't do enough" during Hitler's rise, but what exactly did they fail to do? And are we making those same mistakes now?
We must abandon the tribalist view that Germans possessed unique evil. If we believe in Original Sin, we know our capacity for evil equals theirs. The German Church lacked what we have: the benefit of hindsight, seeing what happens when a church fails to stand. We are therefore without excuse if we repeat their mistakes.
The German Church failed to see the future-or rather, failed to heed prophets like Bonhoeffer who could see it. They ignored his warnings, viewing him as an intellectual hothead who exaggerated the stakes. They lacked the courage to stand against the tide of history, to recognize where their small actions and inactions would lead.
On November 6, 1932-Reformation Sunday-Bonhoeffer delivered a prophetic sermon at the prestigious Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtniskirche in Berlin. He chose his text from Revelation 2:4-5: "But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first... repent... If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place."
Bonhoeffer warned that the German Church had drifted impossibly far from Luther's heroic faith. He challenged the elite congregation's self-congratulatory celebration, declaring "Protestantism is not about us and our protest against the world, but rather about God's protest against us." The young preacher boldly proclaimed that God would judge them if they didn't repent and stop "playing church."
His warnings went unheeded. While Luther had stood against powerful forces of his day, facing death for his beliefs, the German Church of Bonhoeffer's time feared losing respectability more than they feared God. Eleven years later, in November 1943, RAF bombs nearly obliterated the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church during efforts to defeat the Nazi war machine-a graphic fulfillment of Bonhoeffer's prophetic warning.

The Battle for the Church's Soul
Three months after Bonhoeffer's sermon, Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany. Though initially coy about details, Hitler was deeply committed to fundamentally transforming Germany, including bringing the German Church into alignment with Nazi doctrines.
Just two days after Hitler's rise to power, Bonhoeffer gave a radio address on "Leadership" that challenged Hitler's "Fuhrerprinzip" (Leadership Principle). Bonhoeffer contrasted the biblical model of servant leadership with Hitler's self-idolizing approach, calling such leaders "mis-leaders." Tellingly, his broadcast was cut off mid-speech-his first taste of being "cancelled" in the new Germany.
On April 7, 1933, Hitler signed the "Restoration Act" containing the "Aryan Paragraph," which made it illegal for anyone with Jewish blood to hold government positions-a direct challenge to the German Lutheran Church, which was officially part of the government. This presented a theological crisis, as the Christian church had always welcomed all believers regardless of ethnicity. Yet many German Christians were willing to look away from this fundamental attack on their faith to avoid being "troublemakers."
In April 1933, Bonhoeffer wrote "The Church and the Jewish Question," outlining three obligations: first, the Church must act as the state's conscience; second, it must help victims of state persecution; and third, if the state persisted in wrongdoing, Christians must take political action to "shove a stick in the spokes" of the state machine. This radical departure from Luther's traditional interpretation of Romans 13 shocked many pastors.
Most German pastors found Bonhoeffer's conclusions too radical and premature. They believed the Nazis could be reasoned with and feared appearing politically adversarial. This hesitation frustrated Bonhoeffer, who recognized that each day of inaction allowed the Nazis to consolidate more power. The window for effective resistance was rapidly closing.
As 1933 progressed, battle lines formed between the pro-Nazi Deutsche Christen who supported Hitler's Reich Church and the Bekennende Kirche (Confessing Church) led by Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemoller, and Karl Barth. In 1934, they published the Barmen Declaration, asserting the Church's independence from state control.
Shockingly, of Germany's eighteen thousand Protestant pastors, only about three thousand stood firmly with the Confessing Church by 1935. Another three thousand aligned with Hitler's Deutsche Kristen, but most troubling were the twelve thousand who remained "neutral." Had even a few thousand more stood with the Confessing Church, the Nazis could never have succeeded-an extraordinary and heartbreaking realization.

The Spiral of Silence
Though not directly attributable to Bonhoeffer, the saying "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. God will not hold us guiltless" perfectly captures his message. Bonhoeffer knew that neutrality had become impossible-inaction was effectively participation in Nazi wickedness, with the added sin of pretending neutrality. This understanding drove his transformation from pacifist theologian to active resistance member.
Chuck Colson referenced the "Spiral of Silence" concept from German sociologist Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, who had lived through and initially supported the Nazi regime before witnessing the Holocaust's horrors. Her personal journey from complicity to recognition mirrors that of many Germans who remained silent. She questioned why so few who privately opposed Hitler spoke out until after the war. Her research revealed a psychological pattern where perceived social isolation drives public silence, even when private opposition exists.
Her concept explains how silence perpetuates itself through several mechanisms: First, people fear social isolation and instinctively monitor their environment for signs of popular opinion. When they perceive their views as minority positions, they become less willing to express them. As fewer voices speak out, the apparent majority grows stronger, creating a self-reinforcing cycle where dissent becomes increasingly costly. This spiral continues until an entire culture is effectively silenced, even when many privately disagree with prevailing views.
Conversely, speaking out creates a counter-spiral of courage. When individuals dare to voice opposition, they create space for others to follow. Historical examples show how single acts of resistance, like Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat or Alexander Solzhenitsyn's publication of "The Gulag Archipelago," emboldened others to speak out. Courage begets courage just as cowardice begets cowardice. There is no neutral position-we either help evil through silence or fight it through speech and action.
The fundamental question confronting each person is whether they're willing to pay the price for speaking out. Do pastors fear losing congregants and tithes more than they fear compromising truth? Do business leaders prioritize profits over principles? Do they truly believe God will sustain them if they follow His calling? The challenge extends beyond religious contexts to anyone facing ethical choices in their professional and personal lives. If we claim to believe in higher principles yet fear temporal consequences, including social ostracism, economic loss, or even death, we demonstrate that our proclaimed beliefs are subordinate to our fears.

Faith Without Works Is Dead
Theological errors often arise as overcorrections to previous errors, like swerving to avoid one ditch only to land in another. This happened with the concept of faith, which Martin Luther rediscovered after centuries of neglect.
Luther had grown up in a medieval church that emphasized salvation through works. Through studying Scripture, Luther finally discovered the liberating truth that we are justified by faith, not works. In his enthusiasm, Luther sometimes went too far, initially dismissing the Epistle of James because it seemed to contradict his central doctrine.
James 2 provides the crucial balance Luther initially rejected, asking "What good is it if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?" James clarifies that even demons believe in God but aren't saved, and that Abraham's faith was "completed by his works." The passage concludes that "a person is justified by works and not by faith alone" and "faith without works is dead."
The Genesis story of Adam and Eve provides an archetypal picture of attempting to fool God with false faith. After disobeying God, they immediately recognized their nakedness and hastily wove fig leaves into loincloths to cover themselves. This represents our human tendency toward "works righteousness"-our pathetic attempts to fix our spiritual problem through our own efforts.
When we claim to believe something we don't truly believe, we're repeating Adam and Eve's fig-leaf deception. The American Church has cheapened belief to mere intellectual assent. We point to statements of faith or creeds as proof of our belief, but these become fig leaves if our actions don't align with our professed beliefs. God isn't fooled-He sees our hearts and knows what we truly believe by how we live.
The tension between faith and works that troubled Luther continues to paralyze the modern church. "Faith alone" made Christianity so simple-and ultimately so thin-that it was easily assented to by nearly everyone in Germany, creating the spiritual emptiness Bonhoeffer addressed in "The Cost of Discipleship." True faith had been reduced to an Enlightenment rationalist proposition rather than expressed by loving God with our whole being.
Living out Christian faith is less about what we intellectually believe than in whom we trust. Even demons "believe" in God but despise Him. True faith demands complete engagement of our whole selves.

The Idol of Evangelism
The American Church has fallen into a second critical error: making evangelism an idol. Just as Luther's emphasis on justification by faith crowded out other essential biblical teachings, our obsession with evangelism has distorted our understanding of Christian mission.
When we elevate evangelism as the only worthwhile Christian activity, we create a theological imbalance. The reasoning seems compelling: if eternity is at stake, nothing compares with leading someone to salvation. We comfort ourselves thinking that once converted, a person's behavior and views will naturally align with biblical truth.
But God calls us to many simultaneous duties. Discipleship isn't evangelism, yet both are essential. Throughout Scripture, God's people build walls, fight battles, and sometimes speak hard truths that drive people away. The Bible doesn't present evangelism as our sole purpose.
This myopic focus on evangelism paralyzes us from speaking truth when it might offend. We've reduced the Gospel to getting someone to pray a salvation prayer, neglecting justice, opposing evils like slavery, or engaging with government. We relegate these as worldly concerns, asking why waste time on things that will ultimately "burn anyway."
Yet God sometimes calls us to "speak truth to power" as John the Baptist did with Herod and Jesus with the Pharisees. Jesus called religious leaders "white-washed tombs" and children "of their father, the devil"-hardly the approach of someone afraid of offending potential converts.
Many pastors refuse to address controversial issues fearing it might interfere with salvation opportunities. We become desperate to show we're just like our audience and never judge them. But eventually, we must say something that causes people to stop nodding along-something that might make them walk away. When Jesus spoke about eating His body and drinking His blood, many followers abandoned Him. This wasn't a miscalculation; sometimes truth-telling drives people away.

Speaking Truth in Love
When Pilate asked "What is truth?" he unknowingly addressed the One who was Truth itself. If Jesus is Truth, then truth partakes of love, for God is love. We cannot separate truth from love without degrading both. Our fallen attempts to reduce truth to syllogisms or creeds rather than embracing the Person of Jesus leads to reductionism. Truth is intertwined with love, and love with truth.
There are two ways to err. First, speaking "truth" with so little love that it ceases to be truth. Such people seem more concerned with proving themselves uncompromising than with actual communication. They may even delight in pushing others away.
The opposite error is showing so much "love" that you misrepresent God's love and forsake truth. You become so afraid of saying anything controversial that might push someone away that you cease to speak anything meaningful at all.
We must admit we're often enslaved to public opinion rather than truth. We fear speaking biblical truths about sexuality or abortion because someone might think less of us or feel judged. But would we have spoken against slavery in 1850 or Nazi antisemitism in 1933? Why do we believe we would have spoken then if we're silent now?
The "Spiral of Silence" makes it increasingly difficult to speak as time passes. Had we spoken biblical truth about sexuality in earlier decades, the outcry would have been minimal. Now it's far more difficult.
Bonhoeffer models how to speak truth with compassion. In his book Ethics, he addresses abortion directly: "Destruction of the embryo in the mother's womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed upon this nascent life... And this is nothing but murder." Yet he shows compassion, acknowledging that "in cases where it is an act of despair, performed in circumstances of extreme human or economic destitution and misery, the guilt may often lie rather with the community than with the individual." This balance of truth and compassion should guide our witness.

Be Ye Not Political?
The idea that Christians ought not to be political was a central error in 1930s Germany and remains so today. While we shouldn't be overly political or place our hopes in politics rather than God, it's impossible to avoid being political altogether when doing God's will.
This unbiblical idea traces back to Luther's response to the Peasants' Revolt of the 1520s. To counter violent uprisings claiming Lutheran justification, Luther emphasized Romans 13: "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established."
Luther's thunderous proclamation of these verses became institutionalized in German Lutheran thinking. Four centuries later, when the anti-Christian Nazis claimed to be the "governing authorities," the German Church largely fell in line, treating Hitler as they had previously treated the kaiser.
The American Church has swallowed similar lies, being silenced whenever our speech is characterized as "political." We're obliged to speak regardless of cultural approval. The Church has always held that life in the womb is sacred and marriage is between man and woman. When the state attempts to redefine these fundamental truths, it's our solemn duty to speak against immoral laws.
While Christians advocating for culturally fashionable causes like human trafficking or racial justice are praised, those standing for the unborn are libeled as backward. We must worry only about what God thinks, not critics who call us "political." Jesus faced similar criticism, reminding us this is ultimately a spiritual battle.

The Call to Courageous Action
When crisis demands action, we must answer two crucial questions: Who do we say God is, and what price are we willing to pay to do right? Bonhoeffer's disgust with the German Church's "theologically based restraint" stemmed from their bad theology and endless debates while people suffered. Following God means risking not just our lives but also misunderstanding, vilification, and betrayal by allies. In the end, we stand alone before God's judgment. Is He enough?
Bonhoeffer's decision to join the conspiracy against Hitler seemed contradictory to his earlier writings about loving enemies. Yet he understood that "do no murder" didn't prohibit all killing, and that doing nothing would implicate him in Hitler's genocide. He trusted God with the outcome and others' judgments, knowing there was no neutral position. The question now faces us: Do we believe God looks at our intentions and forgives mistakes when our hearts are right? Do we have the courage to step out in faith despite criticism from fellow believers?
Jesus's Parable of the Talents reveals God's view of our "safe" religious excuses for inaction. The master entrusts talents to three servants-the first two double their investments while the third buries his talent out of fear. When the master returns, he praises the risk-takers but condemns the fearful servant. Jesus shows there is no safe middle path-either we trust God as loving and gracious, or we view Him as a "hard master" and condemn ourselves.
When we attempt to justify ourselves before God, we fall into the trap of moralism, pretending we can fool God through religious performance. Like the servant who buried his talent, we may use "religious" excuses while secretly viewing God as a harsh judge. This reveals not love but fear and even hatred of God.

The Final Push for Freedom
In June 1987, President Reagan delivered his historic Brandenburg Gate speech near the Berlin Wall-the monstrous symbol of Communist oppression. Unlike many leaders who accepted the Soviet regime as permanent through policies like "detente" and "Realpolitik," Reagan understood its fundamental weakness and believed it could be brought down.
When preparing his speech, establishment figures strongly advised against his famous line "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" calling it "extreme" and "unpresidential." But Reagan, like Bonhoeffer, knew he answered to a higher authority. He thought of Christians suffering in Soviet gulags and refused to accept evil as an unchangeable status quo. When Reagan delivered those words, they carried spiritual power that created the first crack in what many thought an unbreakable edifice.
Reagan's bold challenge to the Soviet Union was like David facing Goliath while other soldiers cowered. With Thatcher and Pope John Paul II, Reagan knew the "Evil Empire" was weaker than it appeared-a facade with rotten posts that would collapse if pushed hard enough.
Today we face different challenges-cultural Marxism, claims of systemic racism, transgender ideology that contradicts biblical truth. The question is whether we'll push against these false barriers or, like the twelve thousand German pastors, hang back to see which way the wind blows.
God calls each of us to specific action-running for office, homeschooling children, speaking truth when others are silent, or supporting candidates others denounce. Following God requires the wildness Bonhoeffer referenced when telling a student every sermon needs a "shot of heresy"-not actual heresy, but the unpredictable goodness of God that challenges safe religious pieties.
Will we be the leaders God calls us to be, following Him wherever He goes? If a holy remnant does this, we'll see God's hand move in our time. This is our moment in history, and God has placed the future in our hands. We must take personal responsibility for our relationship with God, beyond reliance on pastors or leaders, for we were born for this very moment in history.
