Simple associative learning (like Lucy the dog's reaction to moving branches) has proven remarkably effective across evolutionary time, while our causal inference abilities, despite their impressiveness, are evolutionary newcomers with a questionable future given our self-destructive tendencies. In a conversation with his journalist friend Brendan, the author challenges conventional views about human intelligence. The author contrasts Steven Pinker's optimistic view that human problems are solvable through Enlightenment thinking with philosopher John Gray's pessimistic stance that human advances are temporary and cyclical. Despite hoping for a Star Trek-like utopia with floating cities and restored biodiversity, the author acknowledges the contradiction in his own actions-driving a fossil fuel car to a climate rally while lamenting clear-cutting. Nietzsche was wrong about cows being "fettered to the moment"-they can plan and experience melancholy.
