Nascida em 1960 em Beech Creek, Pensilvânia, Bechdel baseia-se em sua experiência de vida como lésbica e em seu complexo relacionamento com seu pai, um homossexual não assumido, para explorar temas de identidade, segredos de família e autodescoberta queer.

Graduada pelo Oberlin College, ela ganhou reconhecimento inicial por sua longa tira de quadrinhos Dykes to Watch Out For (1983–2008), que introduziu o influente teste de Bechdel para representação de gênero na mídia.
