Nanjing, with a population approaching a million, thrived as a center of silk and cotton industries.
By comparison, London was a primitive backwater with only 40,000 inhabitants. Its crude walls extended just 3 miles compared to Nanjing's 20-mile fortifications. London's poor sanitation made it a death-trap, with plague, typhus, dysentery, and smallpox rampant. Life expectancy in England was a miserable 37 years, with one in five children dying in their first year. Violence was endemic-war with France, Celtic conflicts, aristocratic power struggles, and commonplace homicide with murder rates exceeding modern Detroit's worst years.
East Asian agricultural productivity far surpassed Europe's, with one acre of rice cultivation supporting a family compared to England's 20 acres per family. Chinese civilization had consistently pioneered technological advances: Su Song created the world's first mechanical clock in 1086, an intricate 40-foot contraption predating similar European devices by centuries. Other Chinese inventions included movable type printing (11th century), paper money, the seed drill (2,000 years before Jethro Tull), the curved iron mouldboard plow, blast furnaces for smelting iron (before 200 BC), iron suspension bridges, the spinning wheel, land and sea mines, rockets, matches, the magnetic compass, and even golf, which appears to have preceded Scotland's version.
Yet within a century, the trajectories of East and West would dramatically diverge. While China turned inward after Zheng He's massive naval expeditions, Portugal's Vasco da Gama set sail with just four modest vessels seeking "to make discoveries and go in search of spices." Unlike the Chinese expeditions focused on collecting tribute, the Portuguese sought trade advantages against European rivals. This fierce competition drove Western expansion, with Portugal establishing Macau by 1557, soon joined by Spain, the Dutch, and English in the "spice race."
This competitive expansion stemmed from Europe's fragmented political geography-roughly a thousand competing polities in the fourteenth century, compared to China's unified empire. Europe's constant warfare yielded three unexpected benefits: military innovation, efficient taxation systems, and decentralized exploration that no single monarch could halt. Meanwhile, China's imperial examination system, while fiercely competitive, rewarded conformity rather than innovation, producing a conservative elite resistant to change.
The Ming dynasty's inward turn proved fatal. Despite impressive outward appearances, China's high-level equilibrium became fragile. When crisis struck in the mid-17th century through political factionalism, fiscal problems, harsh weather, and epidemics, the system collapsed. Between 1580-1650, China's population fell 35-40%. Without external resources to draw on, the trap snapped shut. By contrast, England's overseas expansion helped escape the Malthusian trap through new nutrients from transatlantic trade and emigration opportunities.

The Scientific Revolution: From Islamic Brilliance to Western Dominance
The early Islamic caliphate represented the cutting edge of scientific advancement. By the mid-eighth century, Muslim rule stretched from Spain across North Africa, through Arabia, Syria, the Caucasus, and eastward to Afghanistan. The Abbasid caliphate established the Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) in ninth-century Baghdad, where Greek texts by Aristotle and others were translated into Arabic. Islamic civilization pioneered what some consider the first true hospitals and universities. Muslim mathematicians established algebra as a distinct discipline, while Ibn al-Haytham (965-c.1039) was arguably the first truly experimental scientist, whose Book of Optics overthrew ancient misconceptions about vision.
Yet by 1683, the tables had turned as an Ottoman army besieged Vienna for the second time. This defeat marked the beginning of Ottoman decline in Europe, just as the West was accelerating in scientific advancement with works like Newton's Principia (1687). The Ottoman retreat reflected growing Western advantages in applying science to warfare and rationality to government.
Europe's path to the Scientific Revolution was rooted in the Christian separation of church and state-"Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's"-a principle radically different from Islam's insistence on the indivisibility of religious and political authority. The Scientific Revolution (1530-1789) gave birth to modern anatomy, astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, geometry, mathematics, mechanics and physics.
By the mid-1600s, scientific knowledge spread through printing presses and postal services, creating an extraordinary scholarly network. Ottoman scientific progress, meanwhile, stagnated due to religious constraints. Islamic clerics like al-Ghazali had argued that studying Greek philosophy contradicted the Koran, and the printing press was resisted as blasphemous. The tragic fate of Takiyuddin al-Rasid's Istanbul observatory illustrates this divergence-demolished in 1580 after just five years when clerics convinced the Sultan that astronomical observation was blasphemous.
While Ottoman science stagnated, European monarchs actively promoted scientific inquiry through institutions like the Royal Society of London (chartered 1662) and the Academie Royale des Sciences in Paris (1666). These societies fostered a new scientific community that allowed ideas to be shared and problems addressed collectively.
The widening gap between Western civilization and its Muslim rival was personified by Sultan Osman III, who presided indolently over a decaying Ottoman Empire after spending fifty-one years confined to the harem, and Frederick the Great, who transformed Prussia into a model of military efficiency and administrative rationality. Frederick's modest villa at Sanssouci exemplified Prussian administrative virtues: strict self-discipline, iron routine, and incorruptibility. His decrees established religious toleration, unrestricted press freedom, and openness to immigrants, creating conditions for cultural and intellectual flourishing.

Property Rights: The Tale of Two Americas
The Americas became the West's world through European expansion across the Atlantic, with Spain and England competing for souls, gold, and land. The outcome is clear-the United States emerged as Western civilization's dominant force while Latin America lagged behind. This wasn't due to geography, resources, or proximity to Europe, but to different governing ideas. The Anglo-American model was built on individual freedom and private property rights secured by representative constitutional government.
This tale of two Americas began with two ships: one carrying Spanish conquistadors to Ecuador in 1532, seeking to plunder the Inca Empire's wealth for Spain; the other, the Carolina, reaching South Carolina in 1670 with indentured servants seeking better lives through land ownership and representation. Francisco Pizarro, with just 180 men, conquered the Inca Empire of 5-10 million people through a combination of European diseases, superior weapons, and exploitation of internal divisions.
In stark contrast to the British colonies, Spanish America allocated land in a fundamentally different manner. In 1534, Francisco Pizarro granted Jeronimo de Aliaga and Sebastian de Torres an encomienda called Ruringuaylas in Peru's Andes. Unlike in Carolina where land was widely distributed, the Spanish granted a tiny elite the right to exploit indigenous labor. These natives were forced to work for the Spaniards, plowing fields or mining gold and silver. Though encomiendas weren't initially granted in perpetuity, they gradually evolved into hereditary haciendas. The conquistador class became America's idle rich, while most people were left with tiny plots.
When settlers first arrived in the Carolinas, they brought an institutional template centered on land ownership. "The Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina," drafted in 1669 by John Locke, proposed a society where political representation was linked to property ownership. The Barbados Proclamation guaranteed "To every freeman that shall arrive there to plant and inhabit before the 25 March 1672 one hundred akers of land to him and his heires for ever." When indentured servants like Millicent How and Abraham Smith completed their terms, they too received land-100 acres for Millicent and 270 acres for Abraham.
This "headright system" made perfect sense in colonies where land was plentiful but labor scarce. This property-owners' democracy began humbly-the first elected representatives of Carolina met upstairs at a modest Charleston house-but launched a revolution in government. The key was social mobility-that someone like Abraham Smith could arrive with nothing yet become both a property owner and voter within years.
The profound differences between North and South American colonial societies became evident when both regions sought independence from their European rulers. While the American Revolution cemented democratic rights for property owners and created a federal republic that would become the world's wealthiest nation within a century, South American revolutions led to division, instability and underdevelopment. The contrast between the two American revolutions is perfectly exemplified by the constitutional differences: the one constitution of the United States, amendable but inviolable, versus the twenty-six constitutions of Venezuela, all more or less disposable.

Medicine: The Dark Side of Western Dominance
From the mid-19th to mid-20th century, Western powers dominated the world through imperialism, justifying their rule on both self-interested and altruistic grounds. The British Empire covered a quarter of the world's surface by WWI, while France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Russia and even the United States built their own empires.
West Africa was known as "the white man's graveyard" for good reason. Between 1887 and 1912, 16 percent of French colonial appointees died in service, while those who survived to retirement died seventeen years earlier than their metropolitan counterparts. As Sir Rubert William Boyce declared in 1910, the imperial question boiled down to "Mosquito or Man," with "the future of imperialism" lying "with the microscope." Empire inspired a generation of European medical innovators: Robert Koch discovered the cholera bacterium in Alexandria; Alexandre Yersin identified the bubonic plague bacillus after an outbreak in Hong Kong; Ronald Ross explained malaria transmission through mosquitoes; and Jean Laigret's team at the Pasteur Institute in Dakar developed the yellow fever vaccine.
The French approach to colonial administration differed fundamentally from the British. Following the 1905 decree by Governor General Ernest Roume, they created the Assistance Medicale Indigene (AMI)-a free healthcare service for indigenous populations that didn't even exist in France itself. This reflected the revolutionary character of French imperialism, which sought to "civilize the inferior races" rather than rule indirectly through local elites as the British preferred.
Despite these ambitious aims, implementation remained limited by resources. By 1914, fewer than a hundred doctors staffed Senegal's rural health posts, and even by 1946, French West Africa had only 152 health posts total. Western research prioritized diseases affecting Europeans like malaria and yellow fever over cholera and sleeping sickness that killed more Africans. The revolutionary ideal of universal citizenship also retreated as the empire expanded, with medical science now recommending racial separation.
At the dawn of the twentieth century, Germany stood at the vanguard of Western science, with German professors claiming 33 percent of Nobel science prizes between 1901-1910. Yet within this genuine scientific brilliance lurked a dangerous pseudo-science asserting that mankind was hierarchically divided from an Aryan "master race" down to a black race barely deserving the classification Homo sapiens. Germany's newly acquired African colonies provided the perfect laboratory to test these racial theories.
In German South-West Africa (today's Namibia), racial theory justified extreme inequality. The Herero rebellion began on January 12, 1904, after a series of provocations including land theft, debt exploitation, and violent crimes against their people. Kaiser Wilhelm II responded by sending General Lothar von Trotha with instructions to "restore order by all means necessary." Trotha chose genocide, declaring his intention to "destroy the rebellious tribes by shedding rivers of blood" through "absolute terrorism."
The genocide reduced the Herero population from 80,000 to just 15,000, and the Nama from 20,000 to fewer than 10,000. With all native lands confiscated under an imperial decree of December 1905, German settlement tripled to nearly 15,000 by 1913, while surviving Herero and Nama became virtual slaves. The horror continued in the name of "race hygiene" as doctors conducted lethal experiments on prisoners. In 1906 alone, 778 autopsies were performed for "racial-biological research," with sample skulls sent back to Germany.
The First World War revealed the hypocrisy of European colonialism and the expendability of African troops in European eyes. Despite protests about the wasteful use of his countrymen, Blaise Diagne soon returned to Senegal seeking fresh recruits, now promising citizenship and the Croix de Guerre. French attitudes were nakedly racist-as Clemenceau bluntly stated to senators in February 1918: "I would much prefer to have ten blacks killed than a single Frenchman."

Consumer Society: From Sewing Machines to Blue Jeans
Singer exemplified the American advantage. The United States attracted natural-born risk-takers and by 1913 had developed an unmatched internal market. Between 1870 and 1913, America overtook the United Kingdom, with a population ratio that reversed from 1:2 to 2:1 and an economic growth rate 80% higher than Britain's. By 1900, the US accounted for 24% of world manufacturing output compared to Britain's 18%, and by 1913 led even in per-capita industrial output.
By 1910, the world had achieved unprecedented economic integration through Western-invented and Western-owned networks of railways, steamships, and telegraphs. American railways alone could circle the earth thirteen times, and a man could travel from Versailles to Vladivostok by train. Ocean freight costs fell by over a third between 1870-1910, with shipping cloth to Bombay costing less than 1% of the goods' value.
Perhaps most remarkably, Western clothing styles rapidly swept the world. Despite Singer sewing machine advertisements celebrating diverse "Costumes of the World," people worldwide used these machines to adopt Western dress. The Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito exemplified this trend during his 1921 London visit, ordering numerous Western suits from Savile Row tailor Henry Poole & Co. The Japanese word for suit, "sebiro," literally means "Savile Row."
Japan's sartorial revolution began in the 1870s as part of the Meiji era's "civilization and enlightenment" reforms. After centuries of isolation, Japanese leaders recognized Western superiority and systematically copied Western institutions, from Prussia's constitution to Britain's naval practices. The most visible change was in appearance-ministers cut their hair Western-style, officials adopted European frock coats over high-collared shirts, and the Meiji Emperor appeared publicly in a gold-braided European uniform.
Despite some traditionalist resistance, most Japanese accepted that Westernization was necessary to achieve parity with European and American powers. This clothing revolution helped Japan gain recognition "as an equal in the brotherhood of nations" and represented far more than superficial change-it was part of Japan becoming the first non-Western society to harness the transformative power of Western development.
The Great Depression seemed to herald the nationalist-socialist state, but this was illusory. The American economic implosion stemmed largely from the Federal Reserve's disastrous monetary policy. Innovation continued unabated with new automobiles, radios, and consumer durables. Companies like DuPont (nylon), Revlon (cosmetics), Proctor & Gamble (Dreft soap powder), RCA (radio and television) and IBM (accounting machines) developed new products and management styles. Hollywood demonstrated capitalism's creativity even during economic panic, with studios releasing Charlie Chaplin's City Lights, Howard Hughes's The Front Page, and the Marx Brothers' Monkey Business in 1931, while the economy floundered.
Blue jeans, born in the American West as practical workwear, evolved into the world's most popular garment and a potent symbol of Soviet economic failure. The communist bloc inexplicably failed to replicate this straightforward proletarian garment, despite its potential alignment with worker values. For students behind the Iron Curtain, Western jeans represented liberation from the drab Young Pioneer uniforms. Soviet officials even coined the phrase "jeans crimes" for law violations committed to obtain denim. By 1986, French philosopher Regis Debray observed: "There is more power in rock music, videos, blue jeans, fast food, news networks and TV satellites than in the entire Red Army."
The communist regime's fundamental problem was its inability to respond to consumer preferences. The Party dictated needs (brown polyester suits) while the market-based West produced what people actually wanted (jeans). Soviet leaders saw Western consumer culture as fundamentally subversive-Khrushchev declared "The youth of the Soviet Union do not need this cacophonous rubbish" about rock music, while one critic complained that "every ounce of energy used on the dance floor was energy which could and should have been invested in building a hydroelectric plant."

Work Ethic: The Protestant Engine of Western Success
In the wake of the 1989 revolutions, Western consumer brands flourished globally as the United States achieved unprecedented ascendancy. Yet now, after two burst bubbles, difficult wars, and a great recession-coupled with China's remarkable rise-we face a crucial question: Is the half-millennium of Western predominance ending? This wouldn't be the first Western collapse; Gibbon's description of Rome's fall in 410 AD presents disturbing parallels: economic crisis, epidemics, immigration pressures, and rising Eastern powers.
Max Weber, the precocious German sociologist who suffered a nervous breakdown in 1897, identified Protestantism as a key advantage in Western civilization's rise. During his 1904 visit to America's World Fair, Weber was struck by the connection between America's material success and its vibrant religious life. His seminal essay "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" argued that Protestant sects viewed industry and thrift as expressions of godliness. "Tireless labour" became the surest sign of belonging to God's Elect, breaking traditional inhibitions on wealth acquisition.
Evidence shows Protestant countries indeed grew faster than Catholic ones, with Protestant former colonies outperforming Catholic ones economically. Protestantism's emphasis on Bible reading promoted literacy and human capital development, with measurable benefits wherever Protestant missionaries established schools. In British colonies, school enrollments were four to five times higher than in other colonies due to Protestant missionary activity. Kerala, with its ancient Christian community that attracted missionaries, achieved 55% literacy by 1941-four times India's average and comparable to poorer European countries.
Europeans today have become the world's idlers, working significantly less than Americans and Asians. The 1960s generation, too young to remember war and genocide, sought post-Christian outlets for repressed desires. Critics see the 1960s as opening the door to a post-Freudian anti-civilization celebrating self-pleasure and rejecting theology for pornography. Yet while these theories might explain Europe's de-Christianization, they fail to explain America's continued Christian faith. Despite experiencing similar social changes, Americans remain as religious as forty years ago, with tens of millions attending church weekly.
The explanation lies in Springfield, Missouri, where approximately 400 churches (one per thousand citizens) fiercely compete for souls. Unlike Europe's nationalized churches, America's strict separation of church and state created an open religious marketplace where innovation thrives. However, many successful American sects offer a consumer Christianity verging on "Wal-Mart worship"-easy to access, entertaining, and making few demands on believers.
While China's capitalist spirit is well-documented, equally remarkable is the explosive growth of Christianity there. Wenzhou, known as the "Chinese Jerusalem," exemplifies this phenomenon. This entrepreneurial manufacturing city in Zhejiang province has seen Christianity flourish from 480 churches before the Cultural Revolution to 1,339 government-approved churches today, with countless unofficial ones. Around 14% of Wenzhou's population were Christians by 2002, with the proportion higher today. Villages compete for the highest church spires, and "Boss Christians" like Hanping Zhang, who employs 5,000 workers producing 500 million pens annually, embody Weber's Protestant work ethic.

The Rivals: Is Western Civilization's Dominance Ending?
Ferguson challenges the "fashionable view" that China remained economically competitive with the West until 1800. Recent research shows China's per-capita GDP stagnated during the Ming era, remaining significantly below pre-industrial Britain's. This divergence manifested dramatically: by 1820, US per-capita GDP was twice China's; by 1870, nearly five times greater; and by 1913, nearly tenfold. By 1968, the average American was thirty-three times richer than the average Chinese in purchasing-power parity terms.
Answering Rasselas's question about European power, Ferguson identifies six "killer applications" that enabled Western dominance: 1) Competition between fragmented political entities and competing corporate entities; 2) The Scientific Revolution; 3) Rule of law and representative government; 4) Modern medicine; 5) Consumer society; and 6) Work ethic, combining intensive labor with higher savings rates.
China's economic transformation has been unprecedented in scale and speed. Its per-capita GDP has risen from 4% to 19% of America's in just thirty years, following the path of other Asian tigers. According to IMF projections, China could surpass America's economy by 2014 in purchasing power and by 2020 in dollar terms. China is already approaching America's share of global manufacturing, having overtaken Germany and Japan.
The 2007 financial crisis accelerated an already established trend of Western decline. By 2050, the West will account for just 10% of global population, down from 20% in 1950. America's federal debt has doubled as a share of GDP in just ten years, potentially reaching 90% by 2021 and 300% by 2047, not counting unfunded Medicare and Social Security liabilities. Unlike Japan's mostly domestic debt, half of US public debt is held by foreign creditors, with China holding over a fifth of this foreign-owned portion.
China's strategy isn't Western-style imperialism but rather re-establishing itself as the Middle Kingdom-the dominant tributary state in the Asia-Pacific region. This grand strategy can be summarized as the "Four Mores": Consume more, Import more, Invest abroad more, and Innovate more. China has increased patent applications twenty-nine-fold since 1995, overtaking Germany, Britain, Russia and France. Research spending has increased sixfold in the past decade, and China is now second only to the US in scientific papers and supercomputing capability.
What could derail China's rise? Four scenarios are commonly proposed: economic stagnation after a bubble burst, social unrest, middle class demands for greater political representation, or antagonizing neighbors into forming a US-led coalition. Yet none of these scenarios seems likely to fundamentally alter China's trajectory.
The rise of the East doesn't mean Western civilization is declining-rather, Western modes are flourishing globally. What made the West distinctive was never a monopoly but a package of institutions: political pluralism, capitalism, freedom of thought, scientific method, rule of law, property rights, and democracy. Even today, the West maintains more of these advantages than competitors like China (lacking political competition), Iran (lacking freedom of conscience), or Russia (lacking rule of law and press freedom).
The real threat may not be external rivals but internal decay-our loss of faith in our inherited civilization. As Churchill defined it, Western civilization's central principle is "the subordination of the ruling class to the settled customs of the people and to their will as expressed in the Constitution." Today, as in 1938, the biggest threat to Western civilization comes not from other civilizations, but from our own pusillanimity and historical ignorance.
