Having spent my entire career at the intersection of politics, policy, and technology, I've witnessed remarkable transformations. A decade ago, my political colleagues thought I was mad to leave government for "an internet search engine," believing all important social and economic issues belonged to policy-making. Now it's clear to almost everyone that technology sits at society's heart. AI isn't value-neutral, nor should it be. Today's AI scientists should proceed with deliberate purpose-peaceful in intent, embracing limitations, prioritizing public good, and rooted in societal trust. This isn't naive utopianism but pragmatic idealism. Technical details matter, but so do principles, governance, and shared visions of the future. Those belong to everyone, not just technical experts.
