Charting Our Course: Choices for a Warming World

Humanity seems dangerously adrift in the sea of climate change without navigational charts or a captain. No action can freeze today's status quo because change is already underway. Both the climate system and global economy have momentum like an aircraft carrier changing course. Greenhouse gases emitted in the past will continue warming the planet for centuries. Even if we could immediately stabilize atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations-an impossible feat-Earth would still warm by another Fahrenheit degree this century, making adaptation imperative. Adapting to climate change requires fundamental reassessment of everything we do. In agriculture, we must consider longer growing seasons, warmer soil effects on germination, changing water availability, crop suitability, new pests and weeds, and fertilizer needs. Public health practitioners must prepare for extreme heat in cities, protect water supplies from bacterial blooms, modify sewage systems for extreme rainfall, and prevent food contamination in a warmer world. The future climate presents profound uncertainties-both scientific and social. The IPCC projects global temperatures rising 3.2-7.2F this century, with the wide range reflecting both climate science limitations and human behavioral uncertainty. Climate scientists project future conditions by simulating the entire climate system on powerful computers. Different research teams worldwide have developed varying models, each reflecting scientific judgments about how to balance complexity, computational efficiency, and regional detail. Uncertainty is often misused as an excuse to maintain the status quo. This "wait and see" approach merely endorses business-as-usual practices. While scientific understanding and computing power will improve over time, waiting for perfect certainty is not a viable option. By 2009, atmospheric CO2 reached 390 ppm and was increasing by 2-3 ppm annually. IPCC assessments indicate serious problems will become very apparent when CO2 reaches 450 ppm-a level we'll hit before mid-century under business-as-usual scenarios. Mitigation efforts must focus on slowing and reversing the loading of anthropogenic greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Energy conservation and efficiency measures top the list of mitigation options. Over half of all energy produced in America is wasted-two-thirds of electricity is lost before reaching homes, and vehicles waste more than 70% of gasoline's energy content. Buildings account for 40% of America's energy consumption, offering enormous potential through improved heating, cooling, insulation, and appliance efficiency. Carbon-free energy sources offer attractive mitigation options to replace fossil fuels. Solar radiation can be harnessed for direct heating, industrial-scale electricity generation, and through photovoltaic cells. Wind power, created by uneven solar heating of the planet, offers great potential where conditions are favorable. Hydroelectric power from dams provides nearly 20% of global electricity, though growth potential is limited as most optimal locations are already developed. Nuclear energy generates about 14% of global electricity and 20% of America's, though expansion faces significant hurdles including high construction costs, cooling water requirements, safety concerns, and challenges of storing radioactive waste. We must closely monitor how reality compares with climate model projections, particularly watching for accelerating changes. Earth's warming rate has increased dramatically, with the past 25 years warming nearly 4 times faster than the 150-year average. Sea level rise is accelerating, with a third of the 1961-2003 rise occurring in just the final decade. Arctic sea ice extent and thickness are diminishing at ever-faster rates, creating feedback loops of further warming. These accelerations may herald approaching tipping points in climate systems. Ice plays a crucial role in these transitions through its high reflectivity-currently Earth reflects about 30% of incoming solar radiation back to space. When ice cover changes, so does the balance between reflection and absorption of solar energy, creating powerful feedback loops. Arctic Ocean warming makes seawater more buoyant and less likely to sink, potentially weakening or shutting down the Gulf Stream. Melting permafrost compounds this by adding freshwater to the Arctic Ocean, further increasing buoyancy. If an ice-free world materializes, future generations will witness vast areas of planetary surface exposed for the first time in thousands or millions of years. They'll observe the gray rock beneath Greenland and Antarctica slowly rebounding from depressions created by glacial weight, while simultaneously watching low-lying continental areas submerge beneath rising seas. The political and social challenges of millions of climate refugees will be unavoidable. History offers instructive lessons about how people confront imminent danger. America's response to Pearl Harbor demonstrated that once a problem captures attention, we can rapidly mobilize tremendous resources. Within months after entering World War II, American industries transformed from consumer goods to war production. This historical example should give us confidence that when people truly understand a crisis, they can refocus and overcome challenges. Who steers humanity's ark today? In one sense, we all do. Just as billions through individual actions inadvertently warmed Earth's climate, we can collectively reverse this trend-though it requires more than changing light bulbs. We must reconsider where we live, how much space we need, our energy consumption, transportation choices, travel habits, and family size. Individual efforts must be amplified through collective action. Our most powerful tool is the ballot box, as governments control energy policy, tax incentives, emissions regulations, scientific research funding, and international cooperation. A Native American proverb says we haven't inherited Earth from ancestors but borrowed it from children. Will we repay them with a degraded, ice-free planet where seawater floods coastal cities? Or will we pass on a world rescued by the same people who inadvertently initiated climate change? Despite turbulent seas ahead, we sail into unbounded opportunity. Let us seize the day!
