This "SAT-ocracy" successfully opened opportunities and propelled economic growth. But this era is ending, as R-Directed Thinking becomes increasingly valuable. Three forces are driving this shift: Abundance, Asia, and Automation.
Abundance has transformed modern life from one defined by scarcity to one characterized by excess. Our left-brain-powered information economy has produced unimaginable wealth: two-thirds of Americans own homes, the country has more cars than licensed drivers, and self-storage has become a $17 billion industry. This material prosperity has diminished the significance of L-Directed thinking while elevating R-Directed sensibilities. Products must now be not just functional but beautiful and meaningful-like Michael Graves' designer toilet brushes selling at Target for $5.99.
Asia represents the outsourcing of knowledge work to countries with educated, English-speaking workers willing to work for a fraction of Western salaries. In Mumbai, young Indian software engineers earn just $15,000 annually while writing code for North American banks and airlines. India produces 350,000 engineering graduates yearly, and over half of Fortune 500 companies now outsource software work there. Beyond programming, financial analysis, legal research, accounting, and even radiology are migrating to low-cost countries. By 2015, 3.3 million white-collar jobs worth $136 billion in wages will shift from the US to countries like India, China, and Russia.
Automation threatens knowledge workers just as machines once replaced physical laborers. When chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, who once boasted "No computer can ever beat me," was defeated by IBM's Deep Blue, it symbolized this shift. Software now writes code faster than programmers, medical diagnosis programs allow patients to self-diagnose, and legal websites offer cheap document services. As routine L-Directed work gets automated, professionals must develop R-Directed skills that computers can't replicate.

Researchers Paul Ray and Sherry Ruth Anderson identified a growing subculture of fifty million "Cultural Creatives" who excel at synthesis, embrace empathy, and value personal experience as ways of knowing. For many, especially aging baby boomers, meaning has become the new money.

Like drawing, Symphony is fundamentally about relationships-understanding connections between diverse disciplines, linking seemingly unconnected elements, and becoming adept at analogy. This creates opportunities for three types of people: boundary crossers, inventors, and metaphor makers.
In our "multi" world (multimedia, multicultural, multitasking), success increasingly goes to those who can operate across different realms-"boundary crossers" who develop expertise in multiple spheres and find joy in the variety of human experience. Creative people typically cross domain boundaries, seeing relationships others miss. These multifaceted people often solve problems that stump specialists, reject either/or thinking for blended solutions, and frequently transcend traditional gender stereotyping-possessing what Csikszentmihalyi calls psychological androgyny that doubles their repertoire of responses.
R-Directed thinkers understand the "Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Theory of Innovation": powerful ideas often come from combining two existing concepts nobody thought to unite. John Fabel, for instance, combined suspension bridge structure with traditional backpacks to create the Ecotrek. Cognitive scientists have found that insight moments produce bursts of right-hemisphere neural activity. In the Conceptual Age, where innovation quickly becomes commodity, this ability to experiment with novel combinations becomes essential.
Metaphor-understanding one thing in terms of something else-is central to human reasoning, not mere ornamentation. In our complex world, "imaginative rationality" has become increasingly valuable. While computers can sort data, only the human mind can think metaphorically and detect relationships computers miss. Studies show that pattern recognition distinguishes star executives from average performers, with top leaders relying more on intuitive, contextual reasoning than deductive logic. This holistic perspective extends beyond business into medicine, where integrative approaches treat the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. Ultimately, seeing the big picture offers an antidote to modern life's time crunches and information overload by helping us distinguish what truly matters.

Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else's position and intuit what they're feeling-not merely sympathizing, but experiencing with them. With forty-three tiny muscles, our faces convey the full range of human feeling, primarily processed by the right hemisphere of our brain. While computers excel at mathematical tasks, they remain "autistic" when interpreting human emotions.
In the Conceptual Age, work requiring deep understanding of human interaction-like effective legal representation-becomes more valuable precisely because it can't be reduced to rules or outsourced. Empathy transcends being merely a vocational skill; it's an ethic for living that connects us across cultures.
Empathy is reshaping medicine directly. While standardized "cookbook medicine" has strengths, it's insufficient without empathy-something computers can't provide. The emergency room physician who saved a postal worker from anthrax by listening to his concerns demonstrates how empathy supplements objective knowledge. Medical schools now evaluate students on empathic communication, with courses like "The Craft of Empathy" teaching nonverbal cues.
The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy shows empathic doctors achieve better clinical outcomes than detached ones, regardless of traditional test scores. Success in the Conceptual Age requires "androgynous minds" that can toggle between detachment and attunement as needed.

What began as seemingly ridiculous has spread to about 2,500 laughter clubs worldwide, including nearly 100 in Mumbai alone and hundreds in the United States.
Play is becoming an essential high-concept, high-touch aptitude in the Conceptual Age, manifesting in three ways: games, humor, and joyfulness. This marks a dramatic shift from Henry Ford's era when laughter was a disciplinary offense at the River Rouge plant. Today, companies like Southwest Airlines explicitly incorporate fun into their mission statements, and even traditionally serious European firms hire "Serious Play" consultants.
Video games have become a powerful cultural and economic force. The video game industry now exceeds the motion picture industry in revenue. Half of all Americans over age six play computer and video games, with Americans purchasing 220 million games annually. Electronic Arts earned nearly $3 billion in 2004, more than the combined revenue of the year's top ten movies.
Far from being mere entertainment, games have become powerful learning tools. Research shows that playing video games enhances visual perception by 30 percent, improves information processing, and even helps physicians make fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery. Games teach complex systems thinking and pattern recognition-Symphony skills essential in the Conceptual Age.
The right hemisphere plays an essential role in understanding and appreciating humor. When neuroscientists tested subjects with right hemisphere damage, particularly in the frontal lobe, they couldn't correctly identify punch lines in jokes. Humor involves incongruity that the left brain struggles with, requiring the right hemisphere to resolve the incongruity by making sense of it in a new way.
Humor represents one of the highest forms of human intelligence, embodying the right hemisphere's ability to place situations in context, glimpse the big picture, and combine different perspectives. In the workplace, humor "greases the management wheels" by reducing hostility, deflecting criticism, relieving tension, and improving morale. Research shows the most effective executives use humor twice as often as average managers, as it signals high emotional intelligence.
For Kataria, humor isn't necessary for laughter. His clubs aim for "thought-free" laughter-a meditative state where "if you're laughing, you cannot think." He distinguishes between conditional happiness and unconditional joyfulness: "When you depend on something else to make you laugh, the laughter doesn't belong to you." Children laugh naturally from infancy, while adults laugh rarely by comparison.

This collaboration represents a growing recognition that spirituality-our concern for life's meaning and purpose-is fundamental to human existence. Research suggests our capacity for faith may be neurologically wired, particularly in the right hemisphere.
Studies show spirituality's practical benefits: regular prayer correlates with lower blood pressure, religious service attendance with reduced risk of certain diseases, and belief in life's higher purpose can buffer against heart disease. Recognizing these benefits, more than half of American medical schools now offer courses in spirituality and health, with some doctors taking "spiritual histories" of patients-part of a whole-person approach to medicine.
Even business has begun taking spirituality seriously in the Conceptual Age, with companies that acknowledge spiritual values and align them with goals outperforming those that don't. As more companies grasp this, we're seeing a rise in spirit in business and spirit as business-commercial ventures helping a meaning-seeking population find transcendence.
Viktor Frankl wrote that happiness cannot be pursued but must ensue. Martin Seligman, founder of the "positive psychology" movement, has begun unlocking what makes people happy after decades of psychology focusing on dysfunction rather than fulfillment. According to Seligman, happiness derives from multiple factors: partly from our biological predisposition, but also from engaging in satisfying work, avoiding negative events, having strong relationships, and cultivating gratitude, forgiveness, and optimism. Money, education, and pleasant climate matter little.
Seligman describes three levels of happiness: the "Pleasant Life" full of positive emotions; the higher "Good Life" where you use your signature strengths in key areas, turning work into a calling; and ultimately, the pursuit of meaning by deploying your strengths in service to something larger than yourself. This highest form aligns with spiritual practices, and Seligman predicts that enjoying flow will soon overtake material reward as the principal reason for working.
While the bestselling business book "Who Moved My Cheese?" uses a maze metaphor to describe adapting to change, Pink suggests the labyrinth is more appropriate for the Conceptual Age. Unlike mazes, which are analytical puzzles to escape quickly, labyrinths are walking meditations to be experienced mindfully. Mazes engage the left brain; labyrinths free the right. With over 4,000 labyrinths now in the United States, they're appearing in churches, hospitals, universities, and public spaces worldwide. As Dr. Lauren Artress, an Episcopal priest and labyrinth pioneer, explains: "We are not human beings on a spiritual path, but spiritual beings on a human path."

Recent economic studies support this book's central idea. The largest job gains have been in roles requiring "people skills and emotional intelligence" and "imagination and creativity." As computers obliterate routine work, two human skills gain value: "expert thinking" (solving new problems without routine solutions) and "complex communication" (persuading, explaining, and conveying interpretations).
The Conceptual Age offers democratic promise-work not just for inventors and entrepreneurs but for imaginative, emotionally intelligent professionals from counselors to teachers to stylists. The abilities needed-Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning-are fundamentally human attributes that need only nurturing.
The peril lies in our world's furious pace. Those who develop a whole new mind first will do extremely well; those who move slowly may suffer. This new age offers opportunity but is unkind to the slow of foot and rigid of mind. The ideal life is not a fear-fueled pursuit of cheese. It's more like walking a labyrinth, where the purpose is the journey itself.
